On November 13, Reuters (UK) reported that EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said that the bloc's officials are finalizing the final details of the 12th package of sanctions against Russia, which will include a ban on the import of Russian diamonds.
According to Mr. Borrell, the European Commission (EC), the EU's executive body, could approve the package of proposals on November 15. It will then be sent to the EU Council, which includes representatives of the 27 member states of the union, for discussion and approval.
Since Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, the EU has imposed 11 packages of sanctions aimed at reducing Moscow’s financial capacity. The measures span a wide range of sectors and cover around 1,800 individuals and entities.
EU High Representative Borrell informed that in addition to banning the import of Russian diamonds, this 12th package also includes actions to tighten the oil price ceiling to reduce the income Russia receives from oil sales.
Last week, EU diplomats said the 27-nation bloc was waiting for a green light from the Group of Seven (G7) of leading industrialized nations to proceed with the Russian diamond ban.
