Proposal to upgrade the scale of Quang Tri Airport from level 4C to 4E

The People's Committee of Quang Tri province has just issued an official dispatch on adjusting and upgrading the scale of Quang Tri Airport from level 4C to 4E.

Accordingly, the People's Committee of Quang Tri province requested the Ministry of Construction to consider and study the upgrading of the scale of Quang Tri Airport from level 4C to 4E in the process of adjusting the Master Plan for the development of the national airport system for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, and submit it to competent authorities for consideration and approval.

A level 4E airport, according to the regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), is an airport capable of receiving large aircraft such as the Boeing 777, Boeing 787, Airbus A350 and other specialized aircraft.

These airports often have long runways and facilities that are adequate to handle international and intercontinental flights.

According to Mr. Le Duc Tien, Vice Chairman of Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee, Quang Tri Airport plays an important role, identified in the Master Plan for the development of the national airport system for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, with the scale of a level 4C civil airport and a level II military airport.

The port has a capacity of 1 million passengers/year and 3,100 tons of cargo/year; operates code C aircraft or equivalent; land use area of 316.57 hectares.

Currently, Quang Tri Airport Company Limited (Project Enterprise) is implementing the construction of the project items; according to the schedule, phase 1 will be completed and put into operation at the end of 2026.

During the implementation of the Project, in order to ensure long-term exploitation, in line with the development orientation, the Project Enterprise proposed to adjust and upgrade the scale of Quang Tri Airport from level 4C to 4E.

In addition, the runway project (under construction and expected to be completed in 2026) has also been proposed by Quang Tri Airport Company Limited, calculating the structure from ensuring the reception of code C aircraft to receiving code E aircraft.

The proposal has been appraised by the Department of Economics - Construction Investment Management, Ministry of Construction for construction design implementation after basic design and the results have been announced in Official Dispatch No. 828/CKTQLXD-QLXD3 dated April 28, 2025.
