At the meeting, representatives of VinaCapital Group presented proposals on biochar production projects from forest by-products and sustainable forest development projects in Quang Tri province. Accordingly, the projects aim to develop a sustainable forest economy , contribute to job creation for local people; increase local contributions to emission reduction activities and increase the competitiveness of wood products through quality improvement.

The project to produce biochar from forest by-products will use raw materials from forest by-products such as: small branches, leaves, tree roots... after each harvest. Through a survey of the forest exploitation process, the by-products left behind account for about 15% of the total forest reserves, not generating income for forest owners. If the project is implemented, this by-product will be consumed, creating more income for forest owners, contributing to the socio-economic development of the locality. Currently, the application of biochar is widely used in many countries because of its advantages in soil improvement, reducing the harmful effects of burning straw, rice husks, forest by-products; especially reuse in crop cultivation, contributing to creating carbon credits and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

For sustainable forest development projects, implementing activities to extend the logging cycle of planted forests will increase the ability to supply high-value large timber from planted forests, in line with the goal of improving productivity, quality and economic efficiency from forests.

In addition, creating carbon credits from forest by-products and increasing carbon reserves through extending the forest business period is consistent with the orientation in forest development of the "Vietnam Forestry Development Strategy for the period 2021 - 2030, vision to 2050" approved by the Prime Minister.

Quang Tri province has a total forest area and land planned for forest development of nearly 278,000 hectares, of which the forest area is more than 248,000 hectares and the land planned for forest development is nearly 30,000 hectares. The forest coverage rate of the whole province remains stable, reaching 49.4% in 2023. With that advantage, Quang Tri province has great potential in the field of providing carbon credits from forests in the coming time.

Based on the project proposal of the investor, the relevant departments and branches have assessed that the research and implementation of the above projects are consistent with the development planning of the industry, sector and the potential, conditions and current strengths of the province. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the province will synthesize, report the results, advise the People's Committee of Quang Tri province to consider and give opinions on the projects in the coming time.
