The 2025 High School Graduation Math Exam has 'killer' questions

Students cried because the 2025 high school graduation math exam no longer had the element of luck. Despite being well prepared, they approached the exam with questions that they didn't know where to start.

After the 2025 high school graduation exam, the Math and English exams still left an aftertaste for more than 1 million candidates. After finishing the Math exam, many candidates burst into tears because the exam was difficult.

On behalf of the Ministry of Education and Training , at a press conference after the exam, Deputy Minister Pham Ngoc Thuong said that many people complained that the exam was difficult and worried that this year's score distribution would not be as high as previous years in some subjects. But let's ask the question, if many students got 9s, 10s, or even 8s but that was not their real ability but because the exam was easy, would they be happy? If they got 6s or 7s but that was their real ability, they would still have the next steps to maturity and could still enter university or college, which would be happier.

Mr. Lam Vu Cong Chinh, Math Teacher, Nguyen Du High School (HCMC) analyzes this year's Math exam.

According to Mr. Chinh, it is necessary to look at it objectively. The Math exam closely follows the previous sample exam given by the Ministry of Education and Training and the 2018 generaleducation program, when practical elements are included in the exam. This is not only familiar to students in Ho Chi Minh City but also to students studying the 2018 program. In particular, the Math exam no longer has the element of luck. In the short answer section, candidates cannot have luck points like before.

Regarding the structure of the exam, there are 3 parts, in which part 1 - multiple choice test of recognition and understanding type accounts for 3 points, considered enough points to graduate. From part 2 onwards, the exam has been differentiated, in which part 2 is true - false and part 3 is short answer with relatively strong differentiation.

Mr. Chinh analyzed that if previously the Math exam had 50 questions, the differentiation was only in the last 10 questions. Average students could solve the first 35 questions, and better students could solve 5 more questions. Thus, the score that candidates could achieve before entering the differentiation section was 6-7 points.

As for the 2025 exam, part 1 is only 3 points, part 2 is 4 points and part 3 is 3 points. In part 2, there are 4 big questions, each big question has 4 small questions. If you answer one small question correctly, it is 0.1 point, 2 small questions correctly, it is 0.25 points, 3 small questions correctly, it is 0.5 points and all 4 small questions correctly, it is 1 point. If you answer 4 small questions incorrectly, you lose 1 point, equivalent to 5 multiple choice questions before. Meanwhile, students can only be right or wrong, there is no element of luck like before.

In terms of expertise, this year's Math exam had difficult questions, the "killer" question focused on probability but ignored coordinate systems and integrals, so it lost balance. The two high-level application questions focused on knowledge from grades 10 and 11 and it seemed that the test makers had taken these questions from the gifted student exam a few years ago of the old program.

2025 is the first year of the exam according to the 2018 program. According to this program, the content in the textbooks has simplified many difficult factors, factors using mathematical techniques, aiming at problems close to students, but this year's exam has not achieved that. The practical factors are only affixed, the outer cover for the questions is not really close to students. The unfamiliar way of asking makes students not understand the questions, so it is not suitable for the 2018 program.

Regarding the purpose, Mr. Chinh believes that the graduation exam should only focus on the requirements in the program. However, the exam is also attached with the task of university admission, so the pressure to differentiate is too great, making the level of assessment of the exam more difficult, making students feel tired.

While the 2018 program is oriented to reduce academic knowledge, so that students can solve problems based on their thinking rather than their expertise. In the short answer section, the problem has a sphere, which is the knowledge of the cone shape in the old program (can still use knowledge in the new program to solve). If any teacher has taught students to use the cone shape, they will have an advantage.

Should the test makers limit the sensitivity of the old and new programs? The question is whether candidates with below average test scores will be rated as “unsatisfactory” with the requirements of the 2018 General Education Program?

Mr. Chinh predicts that with the 2025 high school graduation math exam, next year teachers will definitely expand their teaching methods, instead of just meeting the requirements of the textbooks, they will teach everywhere, even outside the textbooks. Teaching like that makes students tired, not knowing what is old, what is new, and destroys the original idea of the 2018 program. Should we organize a graduation exam to evaluate the quality of high school education?

Nowadays, universities organize many exams. Candidates have almost taken the university entrance exams, although not officially, but they already know whether they passed or failed. Therefore, when it comes to the graduation exam, they will be indifferent, not interested in the exam. When candidates are not interested, giving a difficult exam to classify is not accurate.

With this year's Math exam, students cried because the 2025 high school graduation math exam no longer had an element of luck. It is also possible that even though they were well prepared, they approached an exam with questions that they did not know where to start and had "killer" questions.

The male teacher said that to reduce the pressure of extra classes, the Ministry of Education and Training needs to remove the “killer” questions from the high school graduation exam and use the results for university admission. These are highly difficult questions and use knowledge outside of the textbook, so they are used to classify candidates. However, the “killer” questions that are not taught in class are considered the main reason why parents send their children to extra classes.
