The rice field banks in Hop Thanh are solidly and conveniently hardened by households.

The family of Mrs. Nong Thi Han in Tuong 2 village, Hop Thanh commune has more than 5 sao of rice fields, each year they harvest about 30 bags of rice. For more than a year now, the family has invested nearly ten million VND to harden the rice field banks to avoid landslides every time the rainy season comes. Mrs. Han confided: “Every time the crop season comes, households cut grass on the banks, this makes the rice fields of households below the banks wider and the fields above become smaller. Seeing this, not only my family but also other households feel sorry and from there they have found a solution, which is to harden the rice field banks. This work of households is fully supervised and guided by the local government to avoid disputes. Since the concrete rice field banks have been installed, people's movement and transportation of seedlings and fertilizers into the fields have become much more convenient.”

Hardening the rice field banks brings many benefits, especially preventing water leakage and water loss in rice fields. When planting, you can add more water, and when there is enough water, you can cut it off. This method is also somewhat expensive, but in fact, a one-time investment will work for a long time.

In villages Tuong 1, 2 and 3, many households' fields have been hardened beautifully and firmly. Ms. Pham Thi Vinh, Head of village Tuong 2, said that before hardening the field banks, some households often had disputes over land and field banks, but since the banks were built, this has no longer happened.

The rice fields of the households and of the village chief Pham Thi Vinh's family have also been hardened.

Ms. Vinh said: “Pouring concrete on the field banks not only helps to preserve the soil and prevent landslides, but also saves households the trouble of weeding the banks and ensures convenient irrigation. Since having wide, beautiful field banks, people have also used wheelbarrows to bring fertilizer and seeds into the fields and to conveniently transport harvested rice.”

In the past 2 years, people in some villages in Hop Thanh commune have competed to harden the banks of their fields spontaneously to avoid landslides and retain soil and water for rice. Along with that, in recent years, the commune has received investment from the state in irrigation canals, making rice cultivation much more convenient for people. The state built large dams, and the people took the initiative to clean and dredge small canals, so there is no longer a shortage of water.

Large embankments are invested by the State, and the rice field banks are proactively hardened by the people to help retain soil and water for effective farming.

Ms. Nong Thi Thu Ha, an official of the People's Committee of Hop Thanh commune, said that the proactive role of households in hardening the field banks plays a very important role. This solution has protected the area of cultivated land as well as saved labor in agricultural production.

Hop Thanh commune is strongly shifting the structure of agriculture and rural economy towards increasing efficiency and technology level through the application of science and technology and production. In recent times, thanks to the good maintenance of 63 irrigation works, the hardening of 90% of canals and the proactive hardening of the rice fields by the people has helped 368 hectares of rice fields produce effectively with a yield of 52.7 quintals/ha, an output of over 1,943 tons.
