Global Information Technology Changes: What Do Universities Teach Students?

(NLDO)- Amidst the technology whirlwind, when AI increasingly actively supports the software production process, is the information technology industry still attractive?

So how do information technology (IT) students need to adapt to develop their long-term careers? From the perspective of designing open training programs, taking advantage of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, training linked to businesses, developing interdisciplinary thinking and skills to adapt to change, Associate Professor - Dr. Tran Dan Thu, Head of the Faculty of Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Management and Technology (UMT) - shares solutions

IT students practice on Big Tech resources

In fact, the demand for human resources in the information technology industry is still increasing, but the requirements from employers are increasingly strict. In addition to expertise, IT engineers need to have innovative thinking, problem solving skills, teamwork, leadership, proficiency in specialized foreign languages, have the potential to become key personnel participating in the software development process or managing and operating the enterprise's information system.

"IT training must be closely linked to technology labs. Most subjects in the training program have more hours of practice in the lab than or equal to the number of hours of theory" - Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Dan Thu emphasized. He said that lab practice helps students deeply understand the theoretical foundation and to be able to apply it most effectively. At that time, learning theory is not only at the level of communication but also a space for students to discuss, think, illustrate and verify issues through the practice process.

However, investing in labs to serve training and practice of information technology from basic, industry, specialized to advanced levels is a big challenge for many universities in Vietnam because of the need for investment budget for both hardware and software.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Dan Thu, in addition to equipping PC workstations and Apple MAC computers with suitable configurations, building a stable LAN network system, connecting cloud computing services or VPS virtual servers sponsored foreducation provided by Google, Amazon, IBM, Apple, Microsoft, NVIDIA will help reduce initial investment costs. Taking advantage of open source platforms (Linux, Java, Python, Docker, Kubernetes, MySQL...), AI-supported practice labs with software and learning resources from Big Tech companies, will open up opportunities for learners to access the most advanced knowledge and technology.

IT students explore the world beyond the screen

Returning from the international experience program in Indonesia last June - an annual program of UMT students, Phan Nguyen Duy Kha - IT student, Ho Chi Minh City University of Management and Technology, said that going beyond the curriculum and classroom hours, the school and student clubs regularly organize seminars and workshops with the participation of experts and representatives from prestigious domestic and foreign technology corporations such as Google, IBM, Microsoft, Amazon, CMC Corporation, VNG Corporation, ZaloPay, MoMo, Agest...

Phan Nguyen Duy Kha shared that extracurricular activities are an opportunity for students to update technology trends from a global and domestic market perspective, and to directly dialogue with "insiders". He also suggested that the school should proactively expand its network of diverse and reliable business partners so that students have more opportunities to practice and experience a professional working environment, under the guidance and support of the teaching staff.

In addition, academic playgrounds, specialized clubs, competitions such as the Informatics and Mathematics Olympics, and programming competitions are ideal environments for students to hone their skills, problem-solving thinking, share their passions, and expand their domestic and international networks.

Interdisciplinary thinking, reskilling, business connection

The IT industry requires rapid adaptation because technology develops at an extremely fast pace and the working environment is very volatile. From the first year, the needs to focus on developing soft curriculum skills, self-learning ability, interdisciplinary thinking and especially the habit of reskilling through liberal education. This approach, which does not emphasize academics, will nurture innovation, curiosity and adaptability in many situations, helping each of you optimize resources and solve problems effectively.

It is important to integrate AI into the learning process and train students to use AI appropriately as an assistant tool. For example, students should learn how to apply AI in various phases of the software development process, from planning, requirements analysis, design, coding, testing, to deployment and maintenance.

Combining training with practice, UMT's Study Tour activities at Business Incubators help students directly contact the real working environment, learn about the processes and requirements of businesses. This helps expand internship and job opportunities for students, helping the training program to always be updated and close to market needs.
