The João Pedro deal comes as Chelsea prepare for their 2025 Club World Cup quarter-final against Palmeiras. |
Immediately after completing the medical and signing the contract, Chelsea took the 23-year-old Brazilian player to Miami Beach to take the announcement photoshoot, taking advantage of the city's beautiful scenery.
For a transfer fee of £55 million, plus a potential £5 million in add-ons, João Pedro signed an eight-year contract with the Blues and is ready to make his debut in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup quarter-final against Palmeiras on July 4.
This is one of Chelsea's most expensive contracts in the summer transfer window of 2025, continuing the club's strategy of recruiting young talent. With FIFA allowing clubs to register more players until July 3, Pedro is likely to play for Chelsea in the quarter-final against Palmeiras.
The Joao Pedro deal will take Chelsea's total spending on Brighton stars to over £271m in just three years. The deals include: manager Graham Potter and his coaching staff with a compensation fee of up to £21m in 2022, defender Marc Cucurella (£60m in 2022), goalkeeper Robert Sanchez (£25m, 2023), midfielder Moises Caicedo (£115m in 2023) and most recently striker Joao Pedro (£50m, 2025).
The Guardian called this figure “crazy”, as Chelsea spent a huge amount of money to bring in a total of 14 players and staff from Brighton since 2022. Even PSG or Bayern Munich have never spent such a large amount of money on a domestic club.
