On August 29, Phu Tho Province Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital announced that the hospital had successfully performed emergency surgery, saving the lives of a mother and her three children with extremely dangerous umbilical cord prolapse.
The surgery was performed in a very short time, just a few minutes after the mother was admitted to the hospital.
Previously, at around 2:00 a.m. on August 24, pregnant woman PTNA (22 years old, residing in Cam Khe commune, Phu Tho province) was 36 weeks pregnant with twins and was admitted to the hospital with her water broken, her cervix dilated 3cm, the umbilical cord prolapsed between her legs, the fetal heart could not be heard on the monitor, the fetal heart was beating sporadically and sluggishly.
Only about 5 minutes after the pregnant woman was brought to the hospital, Phu Tho Province Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital mobilized doctors and nurses to urgently perform a cesarean section for the pregnant woman.
The surgery took place successfully in just 10 minutes, the two baby girls were born safely, each weighing 2.6 kg and were transferred to the Neonatal Pediatrics Department for continued monitoring and care.
Doctor Ha Manh Hung, Department of Obstetrics 3, Phu Tho Province Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital said: According to regulations, pregnant women who are scheduled for a cesarean section must be hospitalized for at least 4 hours to have time to take a medical history and perform paraclinical tests.
However, in the case of PTNA patient, when brought to the hospital, the patient was in a very dangerous condition. If waiting to complete administrative procedures, the risk of losing the fetus is very high.
The on-duty team was forced to decide to perform an emergency cesarean section, "against procedure but in accordance with conscience" when the mother did not have a hospital admission form and had not had time to do any tests.
After 5 days of surgery, the mother's health condition was stable and she was discharged from the hospital. The two babies continued to be monitored in the Neonatal Department.
Umbilical cord prolapse is a condition in which the umbilical cord falls before the fetus, which can occur while the amniotic sac is still intact (umbilical cord prolapse in the amniotic sac) or, more dangerously, after the amniotic sac ruptures. This is a top obstetric emergency.
Doctors recommend that pregnant women need to have regular check-ups as prescribed to promptly detect abnormalities, especially when there are signs of ruptured membranes, they need to go immediately to the nearest medical facility for timely emergency treatment./.
