After Sao Mai 2022, Phuong Nga - top 4 folk music - is considered by experts to be a promising singer. She actively performs but has not released any music products for nearly 2 years.

The singer said she temporarily put her music plans on hold to spend time with her family. The experience of being a mother helped her mature and provide her with more emotional material to nurture her artistic life.

“It’s not that I’m retiring, it’s just that I’m not really ready to say something through music in my own way. I still sing, still stand on stage, but to invest in an MV - especially with folk music - I need a deep enough reason,” Phuong Nga shared at the launch of the MV “Where My Childhood Comes Back” on June 26.

The reason came during the months when she became a mother - a new role, full of challenges but also full of discoveries about love and memories. It was the journey of raising children that brought her back to the memories of her hard-working childhood in the poor countryside, where she used to harvest rice, catch crabs, and dry rice with her parents.

“I was born into a farming family, very poor. When I was young, I harvested, planted, caught crabs, and dried rice in the blazing midday sun. Going to school in Hanoi was a very difficult journey. Those memories have followed me until now, becoming the motivation for me to keep trying when I was still uncertain about my career,” Phuong Nga emotionally recounted.

Phuong Nga also said that after becoming a mother, she looked back at her childhood through a completely different lens.

“After becoming a mother, I have come to deeply understand the unconditional love and sacrifice that my mother has for me. When I was young, at the age of 25-26, I did not feel that. Now, every time I see my mother taking care of her grandchildren and loving me, I feel choked up. The songs I sing are also different, with deeper, more real feelings. I am not only telling my own story, but I hope that when parents listen, they will also see themselves in it,” Phuong Nga confided.

Participating in the Sao Mai 2022 contest, Phuong Nga was assessed to have a rich, emotional voice that is suitable for Northern folk songs. However, what made her slow in choosing an artistic path was not technique, but emotion.

“I was once advised to take advantage of the heat after Sao Mai. But at that time, I knew I was not mature enough mentally to perform a folk song deeply. For me, folk songs are not something that can be “performed” but must be truly lived and experienced, then the lyrics will linger in the hearts of listeners,” Phuong Nga said.

When talking about the young generation of artists pursuing this music genre, Phuong Nga admits that the biggest pressure is to maintain the originality but not to be old-fashioned, to have a unique identity but not to be too innovative. She chooses to go slow and steady.

“I don’t try to be different. I only believe in one thing: Singing with all my heart, singing with life experiences will naturally have its own unique quality,” the female singer confided.

At the press conference to launch the MV "Where my childhood comes back" , journalist Ngo Ba Luc, who has followed Phuong Nga's artistic journey since the early days, revealed: "In real life, Nga is a cheerful and playful person, everyone thinks she is an active and playful person. But when she sings, everything disappears, leaving only poignancy and depth."

Releasing her first MV titled "Where my childhood comes back" , singer Phuong Nga marks her return to music after a hiatus to take care of her family.

The song was composed by musician Vu Ngoc Dam, directed by Duong Lan Huong, and bears the singer's personal mark. With a rustic folk melody, the song evokes childhood through the image of a hard-working mother, a hard-working father, a village road, a thatched roof, lullabies and simple meals. In a simple space, the MV leads the audience back to the roots, where the most primitive love is deposited.

Director Duong Lan Huong revealed that the entire crew were mostly friends and acquaintances, and they supported the singer wholeheartedly despite the limited budget. The song was recorded and produced entirely with Phuong Nga's personal funds.

“There is no tycoon. I am my own tycoon. I put everything I have into this MV because I think that time can pass but emotions can never be regained,” the female singer expressed.
