In fact, after many efforts from organizations, local authorities and the community, the work of preventing and combating domestic violence has had significant changes. Statistics from localities show that the number of domestic violence cases has decreased from over 4,000 cases in 2022 to nearly 2,330 cases in 2024. More than 70% of domestic violence cases have been commented on or counseled in the community. Counseling andeducation activities on preventing and combating domestic violence have received attention from central and local agencies.
Notably, the Vietnam Women's Union has built and maintained nearly 800 pre-marital counseling and education corner models, helping to equip basic knowledge and skills on marriage, emotional management, conflict resolution, and domestic violence prevention and control. In 2024, Ho Chi Minh City established 1,729 domestic violence prevention and control consulting groups. However, domestic violence is still complicated. According to the Department of Grassroots Culture, Family and Libraries, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism , although the number of domestic violence cases has decreased, it has not decreased significantly.
According to the Supreme People's Court , on average, each year, Vietnam has more than 100,000 serious cases of domestic violence leading to divorce or family breakdown. According to statistics in 2 years (from July 1, 2023 to April 31, 2025), the total number of cases related to domestic violence brought to trial at People's Courts at all levels is 405,418 cases.
Notably, up to 341,692 divorces stemmed from causes related to domestic violence such as beatings, abuse, or other behaviors such as spouses being addicted to drugs, alcohol, gambling, or having affairs, accounting for up to 92.7% of divorce cases.
This shows that domestic violence not only causes physical and mental damage but also pushes many families into breakdown, clearly showing the seriousness of domestic violence and the urgency of continuing to have stronger measures in preventing, handling and combating domestic violence.
Regarding this issue, Mr. Khuat Van Quy, Deputy Director of the Department of Grassroots Culture, Family and Library, also admitted that the work of preventing and combating domestic violence has achieved important achievements, but domestic violence is still a painful, hidden and difficult-to-detect problem. The handling rate is not yet commensurate with the actual situation.
Some localities have not been proactive and have not adequately invested in propaganda work. Therefore, in the context of an increasingly society, the media needs to continue to affirm its role as the "key" in gender equality; not only conveying information, but also creating positive influences, stirring, changing perceptions and promoting action in the community.
According to Mr. Khuat Van Quy, communication work needs to apply multiple forms and methods to expand the reach, suitable for each different target group. It is necessary to effectively combine mass media channels such as newspapers, television, radio with social networking platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Zalo and new forms such as podcasts, short video clips to quickly spread the message about gender equality, especially to young people and workers.
At the same time, it is necessary to strengthen theatrical communication through plays, skits, competitions, and seminars related to community life at the groundswell level. It is necessary to take advantage of digital platforms to build and disseminate vivid, accessible, and highly interactive communication content; At the same time, apply data analysis technology to evaluate effectiveness and adjust content to suit the trends, behaviors, and reception levels of each target group.
In particular, it is necessary to increase access to young people, a group that is dangerous to the social environment and is also an important force in the work of preventing domestic violence. Through creative, close and practical digital communication campaigns, young people can become people who spread positive messages, proactively identify, prevent and support victims of violence, contributing to the formation of a new generation with the right awareness of family values and gender equality.
However, Deputy Director of the Department of Grassroots Culture, Family and Library Khuat Van Quy also noted that in the process of handling and communicating about domestic violence, it is necessary to focus on protecting the identity of victims of domestic violence, avoiding causing harm or discrimination. Ensure the content of propaganda is objective and humane, contributing to building the community's trust in joining hands to repel domestic violence.
