Nurturing modern family connections with 'Home Traditions'

As one of the youngest female doctors of information technology in Vietnam, Dr. Nguyen Hong Phuong unexpectedly wrote a book about family, sending the message 'Touching the roots, nurturing the future - It all starts from the home'.

On the morning of July 5 in Ho Chi Minh City, the book launch event of Nep Nha organized by Saigon Book took place. Here, the author - Dr. Nguyen Hong Phuong and colleagues, "benefactors" and the audience shared about how to preserve family values.

Dr. Nguyen Hong Phuong said the book originated when she was working in the field of information technology and realized that "while computers are increasingly being built to look like humans, humans are increasingly living like machines, not present in the present moment."

From this "transition", she "cleaned out the last of her savings" to attend Google's Search Inside Yourself course. From here, her research field changed, moving into training on growth mindset, self-management and mindful leadership.

The book was released at a very topical time, when technology is developing at a dizzying speed and artificial intelligence is increasingly sophisticated and practical, the desire to "return to one's roots" is still something quite luxurious or not really of interest to many people. It is also undeniable that the breakdown in social relationships (especially between generations) is currently quite serious and alarming.

Therefore, from her observations about herself and the luck of having a peaceful home, Dr. Nguyen Hong Phuong wrote the book. She said: "Personally, I was lucky to be friends with my own mother and then also became friends with my two sons. However, as aneducator , I always worry about the gap between generations and the breakdown in social relationships."

With a gentle and intimate writing style, the book is a synthesis of articles she wrote about her family 2 years after her mother passed away as well as short articles that suddenly appeared when she observed herself and wondered what was happening, what she owned, where did it come from?

She emotionally said: "These heartfelt articles helped me remember our childhood, how Hong's mother and Tran's father taught us how to be human... When I began to be more aware of what I was doing, I realized that my family had deeply influenced my life."

Speaking about the selection of articles, she shared that the stories she chose to tell are proof that values from previous generations can be continued in the most natural way. They are arranged chronologically to ensure coherence and continuity, helping readers realize the small things in life that can promote family connections.

And not only are there written pages, but also interspersed in each chapter are self-assessment tables that help readers identify where their family is on the connection scale, so they can look deeper into their family situation and begin the journey of change. There are also "invitations to practice" that evoke awareness, inspire, encourage understanding, and motivate positive action in readers.

Once we realize that, the three parts of the book will provide a practical roadmap to help us re-establish family connections, bring happiness today, and build a sustainable foundation for future generations.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nam - Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of FPT University - said that Nep Nha "is suitable for young people who do not have a family yet, thereby providing a lot of experience in building a family".

Dr. Le Truong Tung - Chairman of the Board of FPT University shared: "As the middle class grows and the impact of technology becomes greater, this book is essential for parents who are wondering how to raise their children appropriately, because it is not difficult to see that today's young generation is hardly attached to their families, and their relationship with their families is only equal to the prescribed social norms."

It can be said that the book has provided a model, a perspective through which the next generation can see that the family is not only a legacy from the past but also a living, breathing value in the present life of each of us. It is the soul, the heart of the family, built from simple moments, sincere love, and drops of diligent sweat, so that, over time, it is imbued with profound, indelible meanings.

Dr. Nguyen Hong Phuong was born in France. In 1976, she followed her parents back to Vietnam. She graduated as valedictorian of the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Science and was one of the few self-funded international students at that time. In 1998, she graduated with a PhD in Information Technology from CNAM (Paris, France) and became one of the youngest female Vietnamese PhDs at that time.

She returned to Vietnam and has been involved in the education sector for over 25 years. In the past, she has worked in the field of creating strategies to build happy schools and businesses to spread a healthy lifestyle. She is currently the Chief Well-being Officer (CWO) of FPT Education.
