Homemade cakes should only be eaten at home?

It is time to have a set of tools to verify and closely monitor "homemade" products on the market from the authorities, because a reputation is not enough.

Handmade cakes (also known as "homemade" cakes) are currently trending among some consumers who prefer traditional cuisine . In addition, one of the reasons why handmade foods are "attractive" is because these foods are considered clean and safe to prepare.

However, recently, Ms. Pham Khanh Phong Lan, Director of the Department of Food Safety of Ho Chi Minh City, has caused controversy among the public when she stated that "homemade cakes should only be eaten at home", because of the potential risks of food hygiene and safety due to processing conditions, uncontrolled food origin, and products that are easily spoiled due to poor preservation...

MSc. Dr. Nguyen Hoai Thu, Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine, said that the market for “homemade” food in our country is very rich and diverse. However, whether it is clean and safe as advertised or not has not been verified…

"If it is only used in the family, it is quite safe. However, if produced on a large scale, handmade foods sometimes do not meet some standards on ensuring food hygiene and safety. Therefore, the risk of food safety is also very high."

Homemade goods, according to the provisions of the law on goods, are mostly nothing but trust. In reality, most of these foods are not registered for business, do not have documents proving the quality, origin of the food, or even the expiration date. And so, a reputation alone is not enough…

"Food safety and hygiene issues need to be controlled more strictly. Because then it will be related to the health of the community. Producers need to be more careful, especially the raw materials must ensure the origin and have clear documents. Besides, the processing stage must also choose hygienic processing utensils and tools. Along with that process, the transportation and packaging stages are also very important in bringing safe products to consumers", MSc. Dr. Nguyen Hoai Thu noted.

No one prohibits "homemade" products for consumption, but when it comes to commercialization, even if it is sold on a small scale to friends and acquaintances, it must comply with the minimum principles of food safety. That is the responsibility to the consumer and to the person who makes the product.

"First, producers need to be aware and have a business registration to be able to partially support the state in controlling food sources easily. Second, management agencies need to divide into surprise inspections as well as more strictly control this type of food, especially on social networking sites or e-commerce platforms," Dr. Nguyen Hoai Thu stated.

It is time to have a specific set of standards for “homemade” products when circulating on the market, such as hygiene certificates, periodic testing, traceability… instead of relying solely on reputation or trust. Only then can “homemade” products ensure that they meet food safety and hygiene issues, for the health of consumers.
