Don't "forget" Long Xuyen

Before July 1, 2025, Long Xuyen was the political - economic - cultural - social center of An Giang province, a large urban area in the Southwest region. When the political and administrative center of An Giang province (after the merger) was moved to Rach Gia, many people wondered about the future development of Long Xuyen urban area.

Famous as the hometown of President Ton Duc Thang, but decades ago, the locality's starting point was quite low. The town was small and narrow, the urban infrastructure system was backward and degraded, many makeshift housing areas were built in many layers, the population density was very high, the environment was polluted... In 1999, Long Xuyen developed and became a city under the province, with a natural area of over 114km2, divided into 13 administrative units (11 wards, 2 communes). In 2020, the city was recognized by the Prime Minister as a type I urban area; affirming the importance of the urban area with the highest proportion of trade and services in the system of 12 provincial urban areas in the Mekong Delta region (over 80%).

In many plans and resolutions of the Central Government and An Giang Province (before the merger), Long Xuyen City was identified as a type I urban area, an economic growth center, an important trading hub, playing a role in promoting the socio-economic development of the province and the key economic region of the Mekong Delta. This is also a locality located in the center of the development triangle of Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho - Phnom Penh (Kingdom of Cambodia). The Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee dedicated Resolution 02-NQ/TU, dated April 20, 2020, to build and develop Long Xuyen City until 2025, with a vision to 2030.

The advantages still remain, but the administrative unit “Long Xuyen City” has completed its historical mission. From July 1, Long Xuyen, Binh Duc, and My Thoi wards were established; My Hoa Hung island commune remained. The new administrative unit carries the expectation of continuing the historical and cultural traditions, continuing the development momentum of the previous city. The biggest difference is the absence of headquarters and personnel of the provincial political system. The peaceful urban area along the Hau River has become much more peaceful and quiet than before.

Also from that "quietness", the question is raised: Will this area "slow down", the urbanization speed also be affected, gradually losing its previous strong advantages? Ms. Nguyen Thi Hau (residing in Long Xuyen ward) shared: "I fully support the Central Government's policy on rearranging administrative units, expanding development space. With high political determination, local leaders strive to operate the apparatus on schedule, smoothly, this is a very commendable point. However, I really hope that provincial and local leaders pay special attention to Long Xuyen. The old administrative unit, the old political center of the province has created a solid foundation for urban development, so it needs to be promoted in the new period. Along with that, continue to pay attention to preventing riverbank erosion, dredging canals, environmental sanitation, maintaining urban order... After the merger of the province, Long Xuyen people really need attention to their lives and economic stability".

Mrs. Hau's thoughts are also the thoughts of many Long Xuyen people, sent to the National Assembly Delegation of the province, including Member of the Party Central Committee, Vice President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Vo Thi Anh Xuan. As a daughter attached to the land of Long Xuyen, comrade Vo Thi Anh Xuan shared and acknowledged the opinions of voters in her hometown. At the same time, she emphasized that there is a new space for development as desired by the Party and the State, when the development space of each old locality has run out. After merging and rearranging administrative units at all levels, the opportunities for socio-economic development and improving the material and spiritual life of the people will increase. The new space is challenging local leaders and people, requiring enough thinking, vision and capacity to promote new potential.

According to the Vice President's suggestion, Long Xuyen is located in the Long Xuyen - Chau Doc - Rach Gia - Ha Tien Quadrangle, and must be a driving force for the development of industry, logistics, tourism, and culture. "If we concretize the orientations of General Secretary To Lam for the new An Giang province, we will clearly see how each locality needs to promote and prepare to realize this desire. Therefore, people can rest assured that no one will be left behind. Although it is no longer the administrative center of the province as before, Long Xuyen still has its own role and position, which needs to be exploited in the right direction" - Comrade Vo Thi Anh Xuan expressed.

In the effort to develop the locality, the most important thing is to change the way of governance. Not only simply state management, but also promoting local governance, grassroots governance, proactively providing public services to the people. The new wards and communes are completely different, with more authority, to serve the people and businesses more. Each cadre and party member must feel honored to be the first to implement the new local government. That honor will motivate each person to be a pioneer, actively performing their tasks. Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan encouraged the people to support and join hands with cadres to best implement the 2-level local government, which is also to serve themselves, to build their homeland in a new stage of better development.

After the administrative unit was reorganized, Member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Secretary of Long Xuyen City Party Committee Huynh Quoc Thai held the important position of Secretary of Long Xuyen Ward Party Committee. Still attached to the old locality, still working with familiar faces, so he placed great trust in the development of the new administrative unit, contributing to the overall development of the province. “We are proud to work in the central area, the third largest in An Giang province (after Rach Gia ward and Phu Quoc special zone), with 154,000 people, nearly 5,000 party members, and 48 hamlets. This feature also helps us see the responsibility and pressure in administrative settlement, local management, and ensuring security and order. To build a civilized, modern, and affectionate Long Xuyen ward, we need a high spirit of solidarity from within the Party to the people, efforts of cadres, civil servants, and public employees to practice ethics, fulfill their tasks well; propagate and encourage people to implement the Party's policies and the State's policies, and join hands to build a rich and beautiful locality" - Comrade Huynh Quoc Thai affirmed.
