“The AFC has not received any warnings or concerns from FIFA regarding Malaysia's 4-0 win over Vietnam,” said AFC General Secretary Datuk Seri Windsor. Mr. Windsor added that there was no information regarding the issue of naturalized Malaysian players, so the result of the match against the Vietnamese team will remain the same.
On June 10, in the final qualifying round of the 2027 Asian Cup, Malaysia, with a strong squad of naturalized players, defeated the Vietnamese team 4-0. This was Vietnam's heavy defeat against Malaysia in recent years. The result puts significant pressure on the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and coach Kim Sang-sik.
However, recently, Indonesian press reported that some naturalized Malaysian players in the match above had problems with their origins. The result of the match with the Vietnamese team could therefore be canceled.
Speaking to Tien Phong, a VFF leader also said that he had not received any official information from FIFA on this issue. Therefore, VFF did not comment on the news reported by the regional press. The defeat to Malaysia has seriously affected the Vietnamese team's chances of qualifying for the finals.
The issue of using naturalized players is also raised for Vietnam in the context of this increasing trend in the region. However, VFF believes that Vietnam needs to have a suitable plan, ensuring harmony between short-term achievements and long-term development.
