In the first six months of the year, Thailand and Japan were the destinations most visited by Vietnamese tourists. Meanwhile, South Korea and China were the two largest markets, accounting for about 46% of the total number of international visitors to Vietnam.
Notably, the tourist markets not only increased in quantity but also had a clear change in travel trends.
Which foreign destinations do Vietnamese tourists prefer?
Figures recently released by the General Statistics Office show that the number of Vietnamese people leaving the country reached more than 4 million in the past 6 months, with the most popular destinations being Thailand, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan (China).
Vietnam currently ranks 10th among the markets sending the most visitors to Japan and 4th in Southeast Asia, after Thailand, the Philippines and Singapore.
In particular, according to statistics from travel agencies and industry data, Vietnamese tourists to Japan have not only increased in number but also seen a clear change in tourism trends. The most popular times to visit are cherry blossom season and red leaf season in major cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto... In addition to central cities, many localities with unique natural scenery and distinctive cultures are also emerging as popular destinations.
According to data from the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) in Vietnam, in the first five months of the year, the number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan reached 311,000, an increase of nearly 10% over the same period last year. This is the second consecutive year that the number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan has reached a record high, reflecting the strong recovery and the trend of Vietnamese people choosing the land of cherry blossoms.

Although Thailand has recently experienced many fluctuations in natural disasters and political instability, protests have caused many Vietnamese tourists to cancel their tours or consider choosing this destination, the overall number of Vietnamese tourists to Thailand is still 1.5 times higher than the number of Thai tourists to Vietnam (estimated at more than 370,000 arrivals, down 26% compared to the same period in 2024).
In addition to Thailand, destinations such as South Korea and Taiwan also recorded growth from the Vietnamese tourist market. Of which, more than 269,000 Vietnamese tourists visited South Korea (an increase of nearly 10% compared to the same period in 2024) in the past six months. Vietnamese tourists to Taiwan also increased slightly compared to the same period last year.
Although the prices of tours to Korea, Taiwan and Japan are often 2-5 times more expensive than those to Thailand and China, because Northeast Asia is a destination with a rich traditional culture, diverse culinary identity, and many direct flights, despite being more expensive and requiring visas, this region is still popular with Vietnamese tourists.
Vietnam: Destination for Korean and Chinese tourists
According to the General Statistics Office, South Korea and China are the two largest markets sending visitors, accounting for about 46% of the total number of international visitors to Vietnam in the first two quarters of the year, showing stable attraction from these two countries.
In particular, the Chinese market has made a leap from 4th place in 2024 to 2nd place this year. This signal clearly shows the strong recovery of the Chinese market and the growing attraction of Vietnam to tourists from this country. In addition, this is also the first time Thailand has appeared in the top 5 markets sending international visitors to Vietnam, along with Japan and the US.
