Mr. Cao Xuan Thai harvested the first crop of grapes.
High economic efficiency
After a period of working abroad in Taiwan, Mr. Cao Xuan Thai learned how to grow grapes and decided to return to his hometown to start a business in the direction of growing organic grapes, applying high technology, not depending much on the weather. To start a business, Mr. Thai contacted a high-tech grape growing cooperative in the old Vinh Phuc province to learn more experience, buy seeds, materials, and link up to consume products. He also rented machinery to level and loosen the soil in the garden, clean grass, disinfect, buy barbed wire to fence around, make a 1.5 m wide, 1.7 m high iron trellis, a nylon roof, install an automatic irrigation system...
In early 2024, when the weather warmed up, he bought 300 Black Summer grape trees and 50 Korean milk grape trees to plant on an area of 1,600 m2 . The total investment capital for the model so far is about 400 million VND. Over time, Mr. Thai's vineyard has grown well, adapted to the climate and soil conditions in the Kim Phu highlands and produced beautiful, ripe fruit clusters.
Mr. Thai shared: “This year, the grapes have just started to bear fruit, the roots are still weak so I don't leave many fruits. I only leave about 10 bunches of Korean milk grapes on each tree, and 4-5 bunches of Black Summer grapes (each bunch weighs about 600g). When the grapes are about to be harvested, I wrap them in plastic to keep the fruit beautiful and shiny, and to limit bees and insects from stinging and reducing the yield.”
In the first crop, Mr. Thai harvested over 800 kg of Black Summer grapes, selling them at 100,000 VND/kg. The 50 Korean milk grape plants alone are expected to yield about 300 kg of fruit in a week and have been booked by customers at 200,000 VND/kg. If all goes well, the revenue of the entire vineyard this time will be about 140 million VND. According to Mr. Thai, starting from the third year, each crop of Korean milk grapes will yield about 17 kg of fruit, and Black Summer grapes will yield about 10 kg (the grape plants yield 2 crops/year). Thus, it is expected that each year, Mr. Thai will harvest about 1.5 tons of Korean milk grapes and 6 tons of Black Summer grapes.
In addition to growing grapes, Mr. Thai also invested in planting 80 Taiwanese guava trees and 70 Thai custard apple trees. These crops are also applied with high technology so they grow very well and are expected to be harvested in about 3 years.

A place of interesting experiences
In recent days, hearing that Mr. Cao Xuan Thai's vineyard is ripe and sweet, many tourists from inside and outside the district have come to visit and experience it. Visitors to the vineyard are mainly families and schools bringing their children to visit and take pictures during the summer. Many tourists visit the vineyard, take pictures and share them on social networks, so the number of people visiting and experiencing it is increasing.
Ms. Cao Thi Thanh Le, in Dong Hoi ward, shared: "During the summer vacation, I let my children visit my hometown. Knowing that Mr. Thai's vineyard was ripening and open to visitors for free, I took my children there to experience it. My children were very happy to pick and eat grapes themselves and learn about the grape growing process of farmers in their hometown. Mr. Thai's grapes are very sweet and are grown organically, so they are clean and can be picked and eaten very right in the garden."
Ms. Tran Thi Khanh Ly, Minh Hoa commune, also took her children to visit Mr. Thai's vineyard. Phan Duc Minh, Ms. Ly's son, confided: "This is the first time I have seen grapevines, picked and eaten the sweet, juicy grapes myself, so I really like it. When I return, I will introduce more friends to come here to experience it."
"Kim Phu commune has the potential to develop eco-tourism and experience. Every year, the commune welcomes thousands of domestic and international tourists to visit the cave system, historical sites, and sightsee... The construction of a vineyard and fruit tree garden using high technology by Mr. Cao Xuan Thai will create more tourism products, contribute to attracting tourists well and increase income for families as well as local people," said Kim Phu commune Party Secretary Nguyen Bac Viet. |
Mr. Cao Xuan Thai shared: "I was very surprised to see my vineyard attracting many visitors to come and experience. However, because the grapes were just planted for the first time, there were not many fruits, so visitors came to visit and asked to buy large quantities but I did not have enough to sell. In the near future, I will expand the grape growing area, create photo spots to welcome visitors to come and experience. In addition, I will also transfer science and technology to people in the commune to grow fruit trees in a high-tech direction, linking with key points to consume products”...
Although newly deployed, Mr. Cao Xuan Thai's grape growing model shows economic efficiency as well as potential for developing experiential tourism. Chairman of the Kim Phu Commune Farmers' Association Dinh Thanh Hai said: "Converting the mixed garden model to a high-tech grape growing model is a bold step by young farmer Cao Xuan Thai. In the coming time, the association will have support policies for Mr. Thai as well as local people to expand the grape growing area, connecting to the market for clean products"...
