Efficiency from rice production models following VietGAP standards

In the trend of modern agriculture, rice production not only focuses on productivity but also places great emphasis on quality, safety and sustainability. Based on this reality, Tay Ninh has soon implemented a rice production model following VietGAP in a number of key cooperatives. Typically, Thanh Hung Agricultural Cooperative (Tuyen Thanh Commune) and Long Thuan Agricultural Cooperative (Tan Long Commune) have been selected to implement the pilot model for two consecutive years. The results have shown clear effectiveness, contributing to increasing the value of rice grains and affirming the right direction in the restructuring process of the province's agricultural sector.

High efficiency

This year's Summer-Autumn crop is the second year that Thanh Hung Agricultural Cooperative has been selected by the provincial Center for Agricultural Extension and Services (KN&DVNN) to implement a pilot model of rice production following VietGAP standards with an area of 50 hectares and 13 participating households. Accordingly, farmers implementing the model mainly sow two main varieties, OM18 (30.5 hectares) and IR4625 (19.5 hectares), synchronously applying many advanced solutions such as: cluster sowing, sparse sowing to reduce the amount of seeds; using organic biological fertilizers, microbial products, new generation fertilizers and biological pesticides; implementing the process of "1 must, 5 reductions", "1 must, 6 reductions", integrated pest management (IPM);...

In particular, farmers also have access to drone technology in the stages of sowing, fertilizing and spraying pesticides. This is a new step forward, reducing labor, saving costs and ensuring accuracy. In addition, the model also applies the "alternating flooding - drying" irrigation technique, which both saves water and limits the occurrence of pests and diseases.

Thanks to the synchronous application, the model recorded a production cost lower than outside the model by about 1.42 million VND/ha. The expected yield increased by 200 kg/ha, the profit was higher than the control by about 2.76 million VND/ha.

Mr. Nguyen Van Luon - a member of Thanh Hung Agricultural Cooperative, shared: “Since participating in the VietGAP rice production model, I have seen many benefits such as less labor, reduced input costs, and improved rice quality. Previously, each crop sowed nearly 200kg of seeds/ha, now it has been reduced to about 100-120kg, the rice plants are healthier, with fewer pests and diseases. The biggest benefit is that farmers change their way of thinking, working together in sync, everyone benefits.”

Long Thuan Agricultural Cooperative also implemented the second year of VietGAP rice production model on an area of 50 hectares, with the participation of 16 households, the main variety is IR4625 glutinous rice. Farmers sowed with 100kg/ha of seeds, using organic fertilizers, new generation NPK fertilizers and biological products.

The results showed that the production cost was about 22.56 million VND/ha, lower than outside the model by about 1.48 million VND/ha. The expected yield was 6.3 tons/ha, the profit was about 21.85 million VND/ha, higher than outside the model by about 1.79 million VND/ha.

Compared to the first year of implementation, this year, Long Thuan Agricultural Cooperative has made important progress when farmers reduced 12kg of pure nitrogen (26kg of urea)/ha and initially applied biological products to treat straw, improve soil, limit nematodes, algae, and reduce weeds.

Mr. Le Minh Truc - a member of Long Thuan Agricultural Cooperative participating in the model, said: "Previously, rice farming was hard but the profit was not much, the land was getting harder and harder. Now, applying organic fertilizers and microbiological products, the fields are more porous, the rice plants are healthier. Input costs have decreased significantly, rice is prioritized by traders to buy because of guaranteed quality."

The above figures are proof of the dual effectiveness, both increasing farmers’ income and improving product quality and protecting the environment. In addition, the model also affirms the power of collective cooperation when farmers plant seeds simultaneously, reducing the pressure of pests and diseases and creating a stable source of goods.

The inevitable trend to increase the value of rice grains

From practical results, the provincial agricultural sector affirmed that production following VietGAP is an inevitable trend to increase the value of rice grains. The pilot models play a “nucleus” role, from which they can be expanded to concentrated production areas and large fields can be built.

Deputy Director of the Provincial Center for Agricultural Science and Technology Vo Thanh Nghia informed: “The effectiveness of the models shows that farmers have reduced production costs, increased profits; and more importantly, changed their production mindset. In the coming time, the industry will continue to recommend farmers to replicate the model, increase the use of organic fertilizers, microbiological products, apply drone technology; and link with businesses for sustainable rice consumption.”

Synchronized mechanization helps reduce costs and improve rice grain quality in VietGAP production.

In addition to technical support, the provincial agricultural sector also sets out a development orientation according to the value chain: from production, harvesting, processing to consumption. The goal is to form a high-quality rice material area, meeting the requirements of official export to demanding markets.

One of the highlights is encouraging farmers to keep field diaries and make production processes transparent. This is also a favorable condition for traceability - a factor that is increasingly valued by the international market.

In addition, the province focuses on training and technical guidance for farmers; strengthening the connection between cooperatives and purchasing and processing enterprises; and applying digital technology in field management. These are fundamental steps to improve quality, reduce costs and increase the competitiveness of Tay Ninh rice.

Two models of rice production for the 2025 Summer-Autumn crop following VietGAP standards at Thanh Hung Agricultural Cooperative and Long Thuan Agricultural Cooperative have proven to be highly effective in terms of economy , society and environment - not only helping farmers increase profits but also opening up a sustainable direction for the province's rice industry.

More importantly, through the model, farmers have initially changed their production mindset - from "doing a lot" to "doing quality"; from individual production to cooperation and association. This is the foundation for the province to successfully implement the goal of building a high-quality rice commodity area, meeting export requirements, increasing the value of Tay Ninh rice and contributing to affirming the Vietnamese rice brand in the international market./.
