Xiaomi's YU7 Max SUV has caused a stir after its brakes caught fire during a test in Spain. However, the electric car company quickly explained the incident, claiming that this was a completely normal phenomenon during testing and did not affect the vehicle's performance.

On July 3, a video was released showing a YU7 Max parked in the pit lane with a fire burning on the brake caliper. Technicians were standing next to the car measuring the temperature, and the sensor indicated that the temperature of the brake pad had reached 619 degrees Celsius, close to the melting point of aluminum. However, Xiaomi said that this is normal for the organic material in the brake pad, which will happen when the temperature exceeds 600 degrees Celsius.

Xiaomi explained that the car crashed due to improper use of regenerative braking. The YU7 Max’s “Master Mode”, which is capable of powerful energy regeneration without the use of friction brakes, was not activated during the test. As a result, all the braking force had to be taken over by the brake pads, causing overheating.

While this may be a cause for concern, Xiaomi stressed that the brake discs and pads on the YU7 Max are fully up to racing standards and are in line with the design of a high-performance electric sports car. The company said that this was just a temporary problem and did not affect the operation of the car.

Xiaomi also confirmed that this situation is not similar to the brake fire incidents commonly seen on cars using carbon-ceramic materials. Instead, this incident is due to the characteristics of the brake pad material and will be closely examined in subsequent tests.

With this announcement, Xiaomi hopes to reassure consumers and continue to build confidence in the YU7 Max SUV, a model with 682 horsepower and advanced energy regeneration capabilities, promising to be an attractive choice in the high-end electric SUV segment.
