The case of cutting down trees in the commune to sell for firewood: Temporarily suspending the appointment of the former Chairman of the Commune People's Committee

On July 8, Mr. Tran Ngoc Thach, Chairman of the Inspection Committee of the Kong Bo La Commune Party Committee (Gia Lai Province) said that the unit is inviting four former leaders of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and the People's Committee of Dong Commune (old) to clarify their responsibilities related to the cutting down of a series of trees in the commune headquarters right before the time of administrative unit arrangement.

The meeting aims to verify the tree cutting policy, the process of preparing documents, implementation procedures, determine personal responsibilities, and serve as a basis for considering signs of violations (if any).

Explaining to the authorities, Mr. Nguyen Dang Chung - former Chairman of the People's Committee of Dong Commune (old) - said that on June 17, a working group of the People's Committee of Kbang District (old) surveyed the headquarters and gave instructions to clean up, trim trees, and pave damaged areas to prepare for the arrangement of a working headquarters for the Party Committee and the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Kong Bo La Commune. Afterward, Mr. Chung contacted the tree buyer, organized the hiring of workers to cut, transport, and sell the trees. The remaining amount after deducting expenses was 9 million VND, which was handed over to the commune treasurer to manage for the repair of the headquarters.

Trees are cut down

However, Mr. Nguyen Van Dung – Secretary of the Kong Bo La Commune Party Committee, former Chairman of the People's Committee of Kbang District (old) – affirmed that there was no policy allowing the cutting of trees to sell for money for repairs. According to Mr. Dung, the cutting of trees by Mr. General shows signs of violations and was not in accordance with regulations.

On this basis, the Kong Bo La Commune Party Committee directed the Party Building Committee to report and discuss with the superior agency and temporarily not appoint Mr. Nguyen Dang Chung to the position of Deputy Director of the Kong Bo La Commune Public Administration Service Center.

Previously, SGGP Newspaper reported that after merging the three communes of Nghia An, Kong Bo La and Dong, the new Kong Bo La commune was established. The headquarters of the Party Committee and the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Kong Bo La commune were located at the headquarters of Dong commune (old). However, just a few days before the handover (June 21 and 22), the People's Committee of Dong commune (old) had 17 trees in the campus cut down to sell for firewood.
