Members of the Provincial Youth Volunteer Veterans Association reviewed the heroic history with the Youth Union members.
Historical mission and immortal patriotism
The Youth Volunteer Force was established on July 15, 1950, in Dai Tu, Thai Nguyen, under the direction of President Ho Chi Minh , carrying the noble mission: Opening roads, transporting goods, providing medical aid, and ensuring logistics for the frontline.
During the Dien Bien Phu Campaign, more than 16,000 Youth Volunteers held out at “fire coordinates” such as Pha Din, Lung Lo, Co Noi crossroads... During the resistance war against the US, the Youth Volunteers force developed strongly with the movements “Three ready”, “Five volunteer”. They were the female soldiers of Dong Loc crossroads, the immortal “steel squad” of Truong Bon in the hearts of the nation, and tens of thousands of young people who were not afraid to sacrifice for the Fatherland.
In Phu Tho alone, more than 13,700 young men and women volunteers have joined the Youth Volunteer Force through four periods. Of which, Youth Volunteer Force Team 253 (formerly Vinh Phu province) is a typical symbol. Established in 1972, with more than 1,200 team members, of which 40% are women, the team undertook the task of opening the 64 km long strategic route 217B on the Lao battlefield - a route with profound military and diplomatic significance. Under fierce bombs and bullets, they still worked hard to build bridges, culverts, spillways, ensuring smooth traffic. Those silent contributions were recognized with the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces that Team 253 was honored to receive, along with hundreds of individuals with outstanding achievements in performing international missions in Laos who were awarded the First, Second, and Third Class Labor Medals by the Lao People's Democratic Republic.
Along with fighting, the Youth Volunteers also made an important contribution to the construction and development of the country. The Youth Economic Zone (YZZ) was established in 7 communes of Tan Son district, the old Phu Tho province, with Minh Dai commune (old) as the center, which is a clear proof. Nearly 55 years ago, with enthusiasm and love for the Fatherland, 600 outstanding young men from the provinces and cities of Vinh Phu, Hai Hung, Ha Nam, Thai Binh, Hai Phong and Hanoi did not hesitate to face difficulties and hardships, volunteering to go up the mountain to perform labor production tasks, build new economic zones, study culture and practice politics. Through the war, the YZZ has trained generations of brave and mature Youth Volunteers, but also witnessed many losses and sacrifices of many of them.
As one of 600 Youth Volunteers directly involved in building the Zone, holding many important positions, becoming a core cadre of the Zone, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lien - Vice President of the Phu Tho Association of Former Youth Volunteers was very moved when the Zone was ranked as a National Historical Relic last April. She also shared: “After the war, despite many difficulties, with the spirit and will of "Nothing is difficult...", the Youth Volunteers continued their new mission - healing wounds, exploring new lands, and building their homeland. They contributed to the construction of a series of key national projects, from youth villages to bridges in remote areas, and outpost islands. Many comrades became Party and State cadres, cadres of mass organizations, actively contributing to the cause of building and defending the Fatherland, adding to the glorious tradition of the Youth Volunteers”.
The Provincial Association of Former Youth Volunteers currently has a total of over 22,000 members participating in its activities. Every year, the Provincial Association of Former Youth Volunteers and its grassroots associations maintain the “Comradely Love” Fund, support the construction and repair of houses of gratitude, and give thousands of gifts to members in difficult circumstances and those who are sick. The Association also actively coordinates with relevant agencies to review, confirm, and propose policies for members.
Today's youth follow in their fathers' footsteps
Today, the spirit of shock and volunteerism of the Youth Volunteers is still strongly ignited in every activity of Phu Tho youth. At the Hung Kings Commemoration Ceremony and the annual Culture-Tourism Week of the Ancestral Land, thousands of young volunteers serve, from maintaining security and order, directing traffic, supporting tourists, to cleaning the environment, contributing to creating a civilized and friendly appearance for the Hung Temple Historical Relic Site.
When natural disasters occurred in some localities of the former Phu Tho province, the "blue shirt soldiers" were the first to appear to help people overcome the consequences, rebuild houses, and clear mud. Activities such as visiting and giving gifts to former Youth Volunteers, lighting candles in gratitude at martyrs' cemeteries... were also maintained regularly by the Provincial Youth Union and Youth Union branches - as a deep gratitude to the previous generation.
Implementing the movement "Shocking to protect the Fatherland, maintain social order and safety", the Youth Union chapters at all levels in the province have participated in many activities to maintain security and order; mobilized youth union members to voluntarily write applications to join the army, contributing to training political qualities, raising awareness and responsibility of the youth towards the community and the Fatherland.
In addition, thousands of union members continue to actively participate in new rural construction, administrative reform, digitalization propaganda, tree planting, environmental cleaning, and even support international peacekeeping activities.
According to statistics by 2022 (by the time of the Congress of Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union delegates in the provinces, term 2022-2027), the total number of youth union members in all 3 provinces is nearly 270 thousand people.
According to Comrade Bui Duc Giang - Secretary of Phu Tho Provincial Youth Union, many programs have been and are being implemented to create an environment for young people to promote their pioneering role in key areas such as digital transformation, tourism, environmental protection, startups...
“We identify educating revolutionary traditions, especially the spirit of Youth Volunteers, as one of the key contents in the work of the Youth Union. Today's young generation of Phu Tho not only knows how to be grateful but also takes practical actions to continue - from volunteer activities, environmental protection, supporting people in disaster areas to participating in digital transformation, building new rural areas. In the coming time, the Provincial Youth Union will continue to widely implement the movements "Youth Volunteers for the Community", "Youth Entrepreneurship, Start-up", at the same time creating an environment for young people to experience, practice and contribute. That is how today's generation continues to write the brilliant golden pages of the history of Youth Volunteers with a new spirit and new responsibility."
The golden pages of history that the Youth Volunteers wrote with blood and tears will not close like an old chapter of history but will forever be a solid foundation for the development of the country today. From Dien Bien to Truong Bon, from the Lao battlefield to the remote villages - the spirit of the Youth Volunteers has never been extinguished because it continues to burn brightly in every young heart - those who, with their youth, creativity and gratitude, have been and are ready to commit, ready to sacrifice, ready to continue writing the "golden pages" of the nation, new chapters for that endless heroic epic.
