Seafood market is bustling, selling prices increase sharply

During the first days of the holiday, local markets in Nghe An and seafood stores all recorded a surge in consumption. People tend to choose fresh seafood to organize family and friends gatherings at home, instead of going to restaurants.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan, a trader at Hung Dung market (Truong Vinh ward) said: “I specialize in importing goods from Cua Lo coastal area, so the seafood is very fresh and is ordered in advance by many regular customers. During this holiday, customers prefer fresh squid, pomfret, grouper, sea bass, etc. Prices have increased but sales are still very good due to high demand.”
According to the survey, lobsters are the most consumed with prices ranging from 1 to 1.3 million VND/kg, 100,000 to 250,000 VND/kg higher than before the holiday, depending on the type and size. Squid is sold at 750,000 to 800,000 VND/kg, an increase of 100,000 to 150,000 VND/kg. Grouper, clams, and shrimps also increased in price by 20,000 to 40,000 VND/kg.

At seafood establishments, the increase is even more obvious. Sea crabs cost 300,000 - 400,000 VND/kg, an increase of about 80,000 - 100,000 VND/kg; mantis shrimp costs 250,000 VND/kg, grouper costs 250,000 VND/kg, each type increases by 50,000 VND/kg compared to normal days. Oysters and clams cost 50,000 - 70,000 VND/kg, also an increase of about 20,000 VND.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Han, owner of a seafood shop on Le Viet Thuat Street, shared: “During the holidays, customers mainly buy to cook at home, so sales increase many times. Import prices fluctuate daily, so we are forced to adjust sales. On April 30, some items such as crab, grouper, and shrimp all increased by 20-30%.”

Not only fresh seafood, dried and frozen products have also become popular choices, especially for tourists who want to buy them as gifts. Dried squid, dried squid, and dried shrimp are easy to preserve, have the typical flavor of Nghe An sea, and have low price fluctuations, so they are favored by many consumers.
Fishermen excitedly stay at sea during the holidays

As market demand increases, fishermen also take advantage of this opportunity to go offshore, considering it a “golden” opportunity to increase their income. After a temporary break to avoid the storm, a series of fishing boats in Quynh Mai and Tan Mai simultaneously set sail during the holiday.
Mr. Le Van Trung, owner of the NA 70134 TS ship in Tan Mai ward, said: “After storm No. 5 and the tropical depression, the sea often has a big catch of seafood. Therefore, we urgently mobilized enough crew members, provided fuel and ice to go out to sea right during the holiday.”

On the morning of September 1, at the fishing ports of Quynh Lap and Quynh Phuong, there were many ships docking. After a night of casting nets, dozens of fishing boats brought back hundreds of kilograms of seafood, from sea crabs, mantis shrimp to grouper and herring. Many boats had a big hit, earning hundreds of millions of dong after just one trip at sea.
Mr. Nguyen Van Trung, owner of the NA 70021 TS boat (Tan Mai ward), excitedly said: “Last night we went out to sea close to shore, and after just one night we caught more than 150 kg of crabs and mantis shrimp. With the high selling price, we earned nearly 50 million VND. After the storm, seafood often resides near shore, easy to exploit, so many boats take advantage of the opportunity to go out to sea.”

The fishing port became bustling not only because of the returning boats, but also because of traders and tourists coming to buy on the spot. Baskets of fresh crabs and pots of mantis shrimp still wriggling were sold right at the wharf, creating a bustling trading atmosphere. Many tourists also chose to buy fresh seafood as gifts, further contributing to boosting consumption.
According to records, sea crabs these days cost nearly 400,000 VND/kg, mantis shrimps are about 200,000 VND/kg, high prices but still many buyers. For fishermen, this is a significant source of income, helping them quickly make up for the time they spent "lying on shore" due to the previous storm.
