Itchy throats at night are a very common condition. This is a natural consequence of our bodies tending to drink less water at night than during the day, according to the health website Healthline (USA).

A warm cup of tea can help soothe a dry, itchy throat at night.

People tend to drink less water at night than during the day. However, the body still needs the same amount of water to produce saliva, tears, moisturize the skin, and many other functions. In particular, some people sweat a lot at night. This condition makes the body more susceptible to dehydration and leads to a dry throat.

Other causes of a dry, itchy throat include smoking, drinking coffee, alcohol, or taking certain medications. In some places, air pollution can also cause a dry throat, along with other symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, burning eyes, and nasal discomfort. Some health problems such as acid reflux, allergies, sleep apnea, or viral infections can also cause a dry throat at night.

To reduce dry and itchy throat, the first thing is to drink enough water. If dry and itchy throat makes it difficult to sleep or startle at night, make a cup of warm chamomile tea and drink it, which will help reduce the feeling of dry and itchy throat. At the same time, you should avoid alcohol and caffeine because they will make the itchy throat worse.

If tea doesn't work, swallow a spoonful of honey or add honey to hot tea. Some lozenges can also help soothe an irritated throat and stimulate saliva production. Alternatively, try cold treats, such as ice cream, or use a humidifier at night to keep your bedroom at the right humidity level.

If your throat is itchy and won’t go away, see your doctor. This is especially important if your dry, itchy throat is accompanied by symptoms like fever, sore throat, or pain when swallowing. If you have a swollen throat, difficulty breathing, hives, wheezing, or tightness in your throat, you should go to the hospital immediately, as this is a medical emergency, according to Healthline .
