Typically, the heavy rain with thunderstorms and lightning in the province on June 2 caused landslides and flooding in many places, causing great property damage. The family of Mr. Nguyen Xuan Mai, group 1, block 8, Cao Loc town, Cao Loc district is one of the households affected by the heavy rain and strong winds on June 2. Specifically, the heavy rain and thunderstorms caused landslides in the area behind the house and blew off the roof of his family's kitchen, causing damage to some household items, with an estimated loss of over 20 million VND.
According to experts, in 2025, there is a forecast of a significant increase in natural disasters and extreme weather. Under the impact of climate change, global temperatures are forecast to continue to rise, especially under the influence of neutral ENSO, increasing the risk of phenomena such as: severe heat, strong storms and floods, lightning.
Mr. Nguyen Van Son, Deputy Director of the Provincial Hydrometeorological Station, said: According to forecasts, this year's rainy and stormy season, the rainfall in the province is approximately the average of many years. In particular, heavy rains mainly occur from August to October and there is a possibility of the largest floods of the year. Dangerous weather phenomena such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, lightning and strong gusts of wind can also occur, affecting production and public health. To prevent and avoid natural disasters and reduce damage caused by extreme weather phenomena, we always focus on doing a good job of forecasting and forecasting. Every day, we collect information and build an average of 5-8 weather warning bulletins (at the most, there can be more than 20 bulletins/day) to send to the Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue (PCTT&TKCN) and districts and cities to widely disseminate to people in order to have timely response measures.
In addition, to ensure the safety of people's lives and property, the Provincial Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Control as well as districts and cities have proactively deployed prevention and response work for heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, landslides; directed communes to do a good job of propaganda to villages, hamlets, and people... At the same time, monitor weather forecasts and natural disaster warnings of specialized agencies to promptly inform people, thereby proactively taking effective prevention and avoidance measures.
Khanh Long Commune, Trang Dinh District is one of the communes with many areas at risk of landslides. According to the commune's statistics, from 2024 to present, there have been 51 households affected by landslides in the commune, of which 4 households had to relocate to other places. Mr. Trieu Tien Quang, Chairman of the Commune People's Committee, said: In order to effectively prevent and avoid natural disasters and minimize damage caused by extreme weather, since the beginning of the year, the Commune People's Committee has proactively propagated and instructed people to check and reinforce houses and public works, and trim high, unsafe tree branches to avoid breaking and falling during storms. In particular, it instructs and recommends that people evacuate people and property when rain and floods occur; when there is heavy rain with thunder and lightning, absolutely do not go out.
To serve the work of natural disaster prevention, from the beginning of 2025 to now, relevant units have provided 27 sets of uniforms such as raincoats, hats, boots to members of the Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control. Every year, the units also conduct an inventory of civil defense equipment, disaster response and search and rescue. According to the report of relevant units, currently, in the province there are 171 life buoys, more than 6,900 life jackets, over 7,400 life buoys, 50 boats of various types, 9 boats of various types... with relatively good quality to serve the work of natural disaster prevention and control. In addition, relevant units continue to make recommendations and propose that the Provincial People's Committee propose the National Steering Committee for Civil Defense to provide additional new equipment.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Chien, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, Deputy Head of the Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, said: To prevent and avoid natural disasters and extreme weather, the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control at all levels, the Department of Agriculture and Environment is the standing agency, has advised the Provincial People's Committee to issue documents on implementing natural disaster prevention and control work; guide the People's Committees of districts and cities to strengthen propaganda work, mobilize people to proactively implement measures, at the same time, develop plans and scenarios to respond to each type of natural disaster, each level of risk, focusing on the motto "4 on-site". In addition, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has coordinated with departments and branches to directly inspect areas at risk of flooding, landslides, and work to ensure the safety of dams, closely follow weather forecasts to have early warnings, and proactively take timely response measures when natural disasters occur. Accordingly, from the beginning of 2025 until now, the Department has coordinated direct inspections in 3 districts: Van Quan, Trang Dinh, Loc Binh. Through the inspection work, it shows that the People's Committees of the districts have proactively reviewed the current status of lakes and dams, issued plans and developed disaster response plans.
Faced with the complex developments of natural disasters and extreme weather, to minimize damage and protect people's lives and property, all levels and sectors need to implement effective response measures such as improving infrastructure, improving the quality of forecasting and early warning. At the same time, each person needs to raise awareness of natural disaster prevention and extreme weather phenomena to proactively prevent and minimize damage to people and property.
