A disastrous week for Turkish football

Turkish football is going through one of its worst spells in European competition, with all four of the country's top teams failing miserably in the play-offs.

Fenerbahçe lost to Benfica and lost their chance to participate in the UEFA Champions League this season.

In just two days, Turkish football has seen four major teams suffer consecutive defeats. Fenerbahce were eliminated by Benfica (Portugal) in the final play-off round of the UEFA Champions League. Mourinho's team has ended their hopes of participating in the Champions League qualifying round and will have to play in the Europa League this season.

The other three teams, Samsunspor (lost to Panathinaikos in the Europa League play-off round), Besiktas (lost to Lausanne-Sport in the Conference League play-off round) and Istanbul Basaksehir (lost to Universitatea Craiova in the Conference League play-off round), all have no chance of qualifying for European competition this season.

According to Hurriyet , Turkey became the first country in the top 10 European championships to lose three clubs in the final play-off round of this season's European Cups. AS called this a big shock for an ambitious football country like Turkey.

These defeats have not only ended the chances of many Turkish teams participating in European competitions this season, but also affected the budgets and reputations of the clubs. Coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was just fired by Besiktas after the loss to Lausanne-Sport, while Jose Mourinho is also at risk of leaving Fenerbahce.

The Turkish Super League, currently ranked ninth in the UEFA league rankings, is expected to make a splash in European competition this season. However, they only have Galatasaray in the Champions League and Fenerbahce in the Europa League this season.
