Died 4 months after being bitten by a strange dog

VnExpressVnExpress31/07/2023

Dong Nai A 33-year-old man was bitten by a strange dog but did not get vaccinated. Four months later, he developed rabies symptoms and died.

On July 31, the Dong Nai Department of Health recorded a case of rabies, saying that the man was bitten by a dog on the wrist, causing slight bleeding. People advised him to get a rabies vaccine, but he refused because he "had no money."

On July 27, he showed signs of fear of water, fear of wind, and choking on drinking. His wife took him to the emergency room at Long Khanh General Hospital, then transferred him to Cho Ray Hospital, where he died two days later. The patient tested positive for rabies virus.

Dong Nai Center for Disease Control conducted an epidemiological investigation and noted that the patient's wife and 4-year-old son had contact with the patient while he was having a rabies attack, so they encouraged him to get vaccinated against rabies.

Half a month ago, a 36-year-old homeowner in Trang Bom district also developed rabies and died 6 months after being bitten by his family dog.

Rabies is currently incurable. Once rabies occurs, 100% of cases are fatal. The incubation period is complex, most of the time within 7 to 10 days or lasting several years, making it difficult to control, monitor and treat. The measure to prevent the disease is to get vaccinated against rabies immediately after being bitten by a dog.
