The Information reported on July 6 that TikTok is developing a new version of the app for users in the US, ahead of plans to sell the app to a group of investors.
The move comes as US President Donald Trump said on July 5 that he will begin negotiations with China on July 8 or 9 about the possibility of reaching a deal related to TikTok.
Mr Trump said the US was “almost” in agreement on the sale of the short-form video app.
According to the newspaper, TikTok has planned to launch the new application on app stores in the US on September 5.
Last month, Mr. Trump extended until September 17 the deadline for ByteDance, its China-based parent company, to divest its US TikTok assets.
The Information also said TikTok users will have to download a new app to continue using the service, although the current version will still work until March next year — a date that could change.
A deal was struck earlier this year to spin off TikTok's US operations into a new US-based company, majority owned and operated by US investors.
However, the plan was suspended after Beijing signaled it would not approve it amid Mr Trump's announcement of high tariffs on Chinese goods.
President Trump said the US will likely have to wait for China to ratify the deal./.
