China builds AI 'chemist' that can create oxygen on Mars

VTC NewsVTC News16/11/2023

Living on Mars requires the ability to synthesize the chemicals necessary for life, such as oxygen, from local resources on Mars, but this is a challenging task.

So, researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in collaboration with the National Laboratory for Deep Space Exploration created an AI chemical robot that can analyze and extract components from Martian meteorite material and synthesize catalysts for a new oxygen-generating reaction in just six weeks.

This AI chemical robot is a refrigerator-sized machine. It is equipped with artificial intelligence technology and a robotic arm to analyze five samples of Martian meteorite material.

It can also determine the chemical formula that intelligently optimizes the catalysts for the reaction to create oxygen. The team believes that without AI chemistry robots, it would have taken humans 2,000 years to figure out this formula.

“Oxygen supply is a top priority for any human activity on Mars, as rocket propellant, or any life support system, consumes significant amounts of oxygen that cannot be replenished from the Martian atmosphere,” the team writes.

Here we demonstrate an AI robot chemist to intelligently synthesize and optimize catalysts for novel oxygen-forming reactions from Martian meteorite material.”

Scientist Jun Jiang of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) said they have developed an AI robot system with a brain specializing in chemistry.

Creating oxygen from Martian surface materials and ice would eliminate the need for astronauts to bring oxygen supplies from Earth to Mars. Furthermore, an AI robot chemist could eliminate the need for humans to oversee the processes.
