From the first failures
Born and raised in a family with a longan growing tradition, Mr. Bui Xuan Su understands the hardships and risks of farmers when depending on weather, pests and unstable markets. Faced with the widespread use of chemicals, affecting fruit quality and consumer health, he is always struggling to find a sustainable direction.
In 2018, after attending training courses on clean agriculture and organic farming and take two courses about organic plant care in Hanoi and Son La by Trained by the Irish Agricultural Organisation , he is determined to convert his family's 1.3 acres to organic label production, saying no to chemical pesticides and inorganic fertilisers.
Mr. Su shared that when he decided to change, many people were afraid that it was reckless, risky, and that they did not know much about organic things, and even his family members did not support him. Mr. Su faced many difficulties: high initial investment costs, reduced productivity due to not using pesticides, unstable selling prices of longan, and doubts from the surrounding community. Especially in 2020 - 2021, due to nutritional shock, longan trees were weak, had low yields, and bad fruit appearance. On average, 1 sao only yielded 4-5 quintals, nearly half the yield of intensive farming according to Vietgap standards, and the most difficult thing was finding an outlet for the product. Faced with that situation, Mr. Su had two choices: Continue trying or stop?
However, with perseverance and belief in the path he chose, he began to improve the soil with compost, compost organic microbial fertilizer, and use biological products to prevent pests and diseases, completely replacing chemical drugs. He also took advantage of folk remedies such as soaking garlic, ginger, chili... to make spray solutions to prevent pests and diseases. He carefully recorded each step, from fertilizing to pruning, flowering, and fruiting, to ensure clear traceability. In particular, he learned the lesson of taking care of nutrition for each tree. Thanks to that, since 2022, his family's longan trees have gradually recovered with more beautiful appearance, higher yield and better quality.
Sweet fruit from perseverance
According to Mr. Su, organic longan tree care takes more effort and time than traditional longan cultivation. Fertilizer for the tree is mainly from soaked corn, beans, fish... products that are composted, deodorized, then mixed with water and watered at the base of the tree. For the whole crop, only Nano Silver is used, sprayed once every 3 weeks, and every week, ginger, garlic, chili, and diluted alcohol are used to kill eggs and repel insects. Mr. Su's longan garden is the first model to apply Nano Silver S500 to produce safe longan products in the export area to the US market. Absolutely no chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used. To prevent pests and diseases for longan, Mr. Su uses organic products to repel insects and help kill fungi, nematodes, viruses, bacteria...
"With the determination to bring customers the highest quality and safest longan, up to now, my family has been successful with the model and has been favored by many customers. After 5 years, the tree has adapted to the new food source, so the fruit quality is uniform, beautiful, and has a sweet taste. But the most important thing is that when intensively cultivated according to the organic model, food safety will be ensured. environmental protection, " - Mr. Su said.

In addition, Mr. Su actively participates in fairs to promote clean products; connects with supermarket chains to expand the consumption market. Currently, his organic longan products are distributed in clean food stores and supermarkets in Hanoi and are highly appreciated by consumers, with prices 30-40% higher than regular products, helping to increase income and at the same time create prestige in the market.
Up to now, Mr. Bui Xuan Su's organic longan growing area is over 1.3 hectares, with an average annual yield of 7-8 tons, and a market price of 45,000 - 55,000 VND/kg.
Spreading clean production model
Having succeeded with the organic longan model, Mr. Bui Van Su actively shares his experience and provides technical support to surrounding households. He participated in the establishment of the Ne Chau Longan Cooperative with the goal of building a clean Hung Yen longan brand, targeting the export market. The Cooperative currently has 33 members with a total area of over 18 hectares.
“It takes a lot of persuasion and mobilization. No matter how much I talk, it can’t compare to people experiencing it firsthand. One tree is fine, a few trees are fine. I often mobilize people, so don’t worry. I do the whole garden, if there is a risk, if I fail, I will be the one to suffer the most, why do I still do it, because I believe it will be successful,” said Mr. Bui Xuan Su, sharing his journey of mobilizing cooperative members to change their farming methods.
Currently, Mr. Su's model is highly appreciated by the local government and the agricultural sector and chosen as a place for sightseeing and study. Mr. Bui Xuan Su's journey of organic longan production is not only a story of clean longan, but also of innovative thinking, daring to think, daring to do, looking far and wide to reach the level of Hung Yen farmers.
