On August 26, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution to establish an advisory body on artificial intelligence (AI) to help countries make decisions related to this revolutionary technology.
Member states expressed concern that the rapid pace of development of a tool that could bring about revolutionary change but also pose many risks to various sectors, so they agreed in September to establish an expert advisory panel of scientists to promote dialogue between governments on AI.
In a newly adopted resolution, the General Assembly established a body called the “Independent International Scientific Council on AI.” The council will publish evidence-based scientific assessments, synthesizing and analyzing existing research on the opportunities, risks and impacts of AI. The body will have 40 members – specific personnel are being sought – for a three-year term.
The resolution also envisages an annual global dialogue between governments and other stakeholders on AI governance. Parties will discuss international cooperation, sharing experiences and lessons learned, as well as AI governance to support the world in achieving the UN Global Development Goals, among others.
The first dialogue session will be held in Geneva next year, within the framework of a world summit on AI./.
