Celebrating the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Public Security Force at the United Nations

The United Nations leaders expressed their admiration for the efforts and proud achievements of the Vietnam People's Public Security force over the past eight decades.

On August 20, in New York City, the United States, the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations solemnly held a ceremony to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Public Security Force (August 19, 1945 - August 19, 2025).

The ceremony was chaired by Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, with the participation of UN Deputy Secretary-General Atul Khare, UN Police Advisor Faisal Shahkar, UN Acting Military Advisor Cheryl Pearce, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Ngoc Hai, Vietnam People's Public Security Officer working at the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations, along with many Ambassadors, Police Advisors, Military Advisors and representatives of Permanent Delegations of countries to the United Nations.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Do Hung Viet highlighted the significance of the “historic Autumn of 1945” and the victory of the August Revolution for the destiny and cause of Vietnam’s national liberation struggle, including the important contribution of the People’s Public Security force.

Established in those historic August days, over the past 80 years, the Vietnam People's Public Security has continuously grown, not only successfully completing the tasks of protecting national security, maintaining social order and safety, preventing crimes, including cybercrime and high-tech crimes, but also, together with the Vietnam People's Army, participating increasingly actively and effectively in United Nations peacekeeping activities.

The Ambassador recalled important milestones in Vietnam's participation in peacekeeping police activities, from sending Senior Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Ngoc Hai, the first People's Public Security officer, to work at the United Nations headquarters in 2022 and more than 20 officers and soldiers on duty at the United Nations Peacekeeping Missions in South Sudan, Abyei and the Central African Republic, to the establishment of the No. 1 Peacekeeping Police Unit in 2024.

In particular, female officers and soldiers account for more than 30% of the total number of People's Public Security officers sent to peacekeeping missions, affirming Vietnam's strong commitment to implementing the United Nations' "Women, Peace and Security" agenda.

On this occasion, Ambassador Do Hung Viet respectfully thanked the leaders of the United Nations, the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPO), the United Nations Police Department (UNPOL), and other agencies, functional units and member countries of the United Nations for supporting and assisting the Vietnam People's Public Security Force to successfully complete its tasks.

The Ambassador affirmed that Vietnam wishes to cooperate more closely with international partners to join hands in responding to common security challenges, contributing to maintaining peace, stability and sustainable development globally.

In their congratulatory remarks, Deputy Secretary-General Atul Khare and UN Police Adviser Faisal Shahkar expressed their admiration for the efforts and proud achievements of the Vietnam People's Public Security Force over the past eight decades, playing a key role in maintaining security and social stability, thereby creating a favorable environment for Vietnam's socio -economic development and international integration.

The United Nations leaders emphasized the participation and contribution, professionalism and high discipline of Vietnam's forces, including People's Public Security officers, in UN peacekeeping operations, which have contributed to strengthening international peace and security, spreading the core values ​​of the United Nations Charter and multilateralism.
