On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the successful August Revolution (August 19, 1945 - August 19, 2025) and Vietnam's National Day (September 2, 1945 - September 2, 2025), Cambodia's Kampuchea Thmey Daily newspaper published an in-depth analysis, highly appreciating the stature and significance of the historical event 80 years ago; at the same time, promoting the good traditional friendship, demonstrated through the mutual support and assistance between the two neighboring countries of Vietnam and Cambodia, both in the past and present, in wartime as well as in peacetime.
In an article published on August 26, the electronic version of the Kampuchea Thmey Daily newspaper said that August 19 this year marks the 80th anniversary of the success of the August Revolution.
This event marked a historical milestone in Vietnam's liberation from colonial rule, and was also a historical link with Laos and Cambodia, two countries located on the Indochina Peninsula.
The article commented that although the historical journey of Cambodia-Vietnam relations over the past eight decades has had many ups and downs, at present, Phnom Penh analysts believe that the relationship between the two countries has made remarkable progress, along with the commitments of the two countries' leaders to continuously strengthen and further expand bilateral relations.
From that perspective, political writer Vann Sokunthea - the author of the article, cited the opinion of local political analysts that with the beginning of the August Revolution in 1945 under the leadership of President Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam rose up, escaped the rule of colonialism and imperialism, transformed itself from a poor country into an independent nation, moved towards territorial unification and had a strong economic growth, and political stability until today.
According to geopolitical analyst Thong Mengdavid, the 80th anniversary of Vietnam's founding is a momentous event, not only honoring the extraordinary self-reliance of the neighboring country but also reflecting the important role of this country in creating peace , security and prosperity in the Southeast Asian region.
In that spirit, Mr. Thong Mengdavid emphasized Vietnam's support for Cambodia in overthrowing the Khmer Rouge regime in 1979, as well as continued support for the country in organizing and training the necessary resources to protect, rebuild and build the country to this day.
However, going back in history to before 1975, Cambodia also supported Vietnam in the struggle to unify the country, no longer dividing into North and South.
Currently, Cambodia and Vietnam are strengthening cooperation in many areas such as border security, crime prevention, defense diplomacy, trade and cultural exchange. Trade turnover between the two countries exceeds 10 billion USD per year, promoted by cooperation in the fields of agriculture , energy, manufacturing and connectivity projects.
In the process of that cooperation, Vietnamese investments have contributed to the construction of roads, bridges and electricity networks, bringing direct benefits to Cambodian communities.
Along with that, Mr. Thong Mengdavid noted that equally important is the story of thousands of Cambodian students completing their study programs in Vietnam and returning home, creating a bridge connecting friendship and mutual understanding between the two neighboring nations.
An article in the Kampuchea Thmey Daily newspaper quoted analysts in Phnom Penh as highly appreciating the stature and historical significance of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2; and praising the friendship, mutual support and assistance between the two neighboring countries of Vietnam and Cambodia, both in the past and present, in wartime and peacetime. Sharing the above view, Dr. Seun Sam - policy researcher at the Royal Academy of Cambodia (RAC), said that economic relations between Cambodia and Vietnam have developed rapidly in recent years, especially focusing on three key areas: trade, investment and tourism. He said that this development not only reflects the commitment of the leaders of the two countries but also shows the great potential of bilateral cooperation, bringing mutual benefits to the economies and societies of the two countries.
According to the RAC researcher, through infrastructure development initiatives and new cooperation agreements, the two countries have demonstrated their shared commitment to the goal of achieving a trade turnover of 20 billion USD in the future. However, the realization of these goals still faces many obstacles, requiring strategic solutions and close cooperation between the two sides. In particular, linking development and strengthening the legal framework plays an important role in promoting increasingly strong and sustainable economic cooperation.
For his part, Mr. Uch Leang - Acting Director of the Institute of Asian-African and Middle Eastern Studies, Cambodian Institute of International Relations under RAC, acknowledged the continuous development in Cambodia-Vietnam relations since the successful August Revolution in 1945 until now.
He said that with the efforts of generations of leaders and people of the two countries, the Cambodia-Vietnam relationship has been promoted and developed steadily under the motto of "good neighborliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, long-term sustainability" that the two sides agreed on in 2005, bringing practical benefits to the people of the two countries.
From that perspective, Kampuchea Thmey Daily quoted a Cambodian analyst stating: “That affirms that the relationship between the two countries is developing strongly in all areas, including politics, security-defense, economy, trade, investment, health, culture, education, science-technology and people-to-people exchange. With the determination of both sides, the friendship, solidarity and cooperation in all areas between the two countries will continue to be raised to new heights, meeting the aspirations of the people of both sides."
From the perspective of experts, the article mentions the results of the August 14 phone call between President of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) Samdech Techo Hun Sen and General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam To Lam. In it, the two leaders expressed satisfaction with the Cambodia-Vietnam relationship so far, demonstrating the good relationship between the two neighboring countries sharing a peaceful, friendly border and mutually beneficial cooperation./.
