Microsoft's Windows 11 operating system has been under fire recently for its annoying bugs. In response, the man behind Twitter's change, Elon Musk, has announced "Macrohard," a "pure AI" alternative.

The name “Macrohard” that Elon Musk has given to his new project is a pun. Accordingly, “macro” (large, large) is the opposite of “micro” (small, small), while “hard” (hardware) is the opposite of “soft” (software). This combination suggests that his project will compete directly with Microsoft.

This information was shared by Mr. Musk himself on his X account. He wrote: "It's a sarcastic name, but the project is very serious!".

“Since software companies like Microsoft don’t make any physical hardware themselves, it’s possible to completely emulate them with AI,” the billionaire added.

Musk’s chatbot Grok also confirmed the project’s existence, describing Macrohard as a bold experiment: using AI to run the entire enterprise, from programming to management to product development. Macrohard is expected to roll out software solutions such as programming agents, imaging tools, process automation, and collaborative multi-agent systems, all controlled by Grok.

According to documents obtained by Business Insider , xAI filed a Macrohard trademark application in the US on August 1. The application states that the scope of use includes “computer programs that generate speech and text” and “AI agents.”

This is not the first time Elon Musk has mentioned the phrase Macrohard. In 2021, he posted the status "Macrohard>>Microsoft".

However, the project only really took shape after X.AI spent $2,300 to register the trademark. Although information about the product is still very vague, blue-ticked accounts on X have begun spreading AI-generated images and hints at cryptocurrencies, indicating that investors are starting to take interest.

Musk’s naming history shows that he tends to prioritize names over ideas. This happened with X. Before it became PayPal, he wanted the banking service to be called X. Then, in 2020, his son was also named X (X Æ A-12 Musk). And most recently, Twitter officially changed its name to X in 2023.

All of these signs point to Macrohard taking a similar approach: a general AI service, and a statement of displeasure with Microsoft.
