Overview of the workshop

Building scientific dossiers to rank national monuments

On August 25, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Gia Lai coordinated with the Institute of Social Sciences of the Southern region to organize a scientific workshop on "Research on the value and orientation for conservation and promotion of the value of Truong Luy relic in Gia Lai province" and reported preliminary results of archaeological excavation of Truong Luy relic.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Gia Lai Do Thi Dieu Hanh shared: This workshop is very meaningful in order to research and comprehensively evaluate the value of the Truong Luy in Gia Lai province; the position, role and unique characteristics of this Truong Luy section in the overall Truong Luy system.

In addition to assessing the current situation, proposing directions for preserving and promoting the value of relics in a sustainable manner, in accordance with reality, is a scientific basis for the Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee to build a dossier to submit to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for ranking as a national relic.

Preliminary report on archaeological excavation results at Truong Luy relic, initially recording material traces of historical value, contributing to supplementing documents for research, preservation and promotion of cultural heritage values in the locality.

Gia Lai province is proud to own a very valuable system of ramparts, but how to research, preserve and promote the value of the relic is a concern of those working in the management of local cultural heritage.

Gia Lai Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism organized a field survey team at the Truong Luy Doan relic site of Gia Lai province.

According to Ms. Hanh, the workshop is also an opportunity for managers and researchers to meet, exchange experiences, and raise awareness in protecting and promoting the cultural heritage values of the province.

In his report at the workshop, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Gia Lai, Huynh Van Loi, said: The Truong Luy relic, with its great stature and multifaceted value, has been compared by researchers to a "Great Wall of Central Vietnam".

This is not only a simple military defense project but also a vivid testament to the history of land opening, to the multi-dimensional interaction between ethnic communities and shows the strategic thinking of our ancestors in managing the border area.

He also believes that the workshop will find profound scientific insights and practical proposals, contributing to awakening and sustainably promoting the value of this cultural heritage.

As a national cultural heritage, it needs to be preserved and promoted.

Binh Dinh Long Luy (now Gia Lai province) is a special rampart structure, extending over 120 km from the old Tra Bong district (Quang Ngai) to An Lao district, the old Binh Dinh province.

In 2025, the excavation at the Truong Luy Gia Lai relic site with the Dong Ham fortifications, H4 fortifications and An Quang fortifications provided new data on the structure and construction techniques of these defensive works.

Dr. Nguyen Khanh Trung Kien, Deputy Director of the Southern Institute of Social Sciences, informed: The new research results have provided additional documents on some fort-like relics in Gia Lai, thereby contributing to comparative research with Quang Ngai Citadel to bring a more comprehensive understanding and, together with historical sources, supplement scientific knowledge about the history of this land.

The results obtained from the excavations at the sites of Fort H4, Truong Luy, Fort Dong Ham, and Fort An Quang have provided important documents, contributing to clarifying the construction techniques and structures of the ramparts and garrisons at Truong Luy Gia Lai.

According to Dr. Kien, the findings show that the construction technique here is a flexible combination of the use of indigenous materials, defensive techniques and high adaptation to the natural terrain.

The foundation structure and defensive wall system reflect a remarkable level of military organization and construction techniques of the Nguyen Dynasty in the process of establishing a defense system for the border area between the plains and the mountains.

The discovery of the watchtower at the Dong Ham Fort and H4 Fort relics has a circular block structure at the intersection of two walls, with an open surface and flat stone foundation, which has many similarities with the watchtower architecture discovered at Thu Fort - a larger fort in the same Truong Luy system.

From there, it shows the similarity in spatial organization, which is that they all have clear defensive surfaces, corridors for soldiers, outer moats and wall systems.

From the perspective of a research expert, Dr. Dinh Ba Hoa shared: Truong Luy is an ancient rampart that is not only long, but also located in a special geographical location. The structure was built entirely on a very difficult and complex terrain, sometimes on the top of a mountain, sometimes on a hillside, along a stream.

In terms of geography, the rampart is located along the North-South highway, which was once the route for historical military campaigns in ancient times and the North-South trade route. Therefore, the Long Luy has great significance in history.

“Gia Lai Citadel is a valuable archive of documents on the formation of cultural identity in the Central region that cannot be found anywhere else,” Dr. Hoa acknowledged and said. Moreover, this is the basis for research on ethnic culture and the construction techniques of the Citadel, which are characteristic of regional culture, and are the cultural exchange and acculturation between ethnic groups in history.

According to Mr. Hoa, international and domestic scientists have assessed that the Quang Ngai - Binh Dinh Great Wall is the largest in Southeast Asia and the second largest in Asia, after the Great Wall (China). Regardless of its construction purpose, the Great Wall is still the result of the labor, sweat, tears and blood of our ancestors and workers. It is a project of great historical, military, cultural and economic significance, and a cultural heritage of the nation and of humanity that needs to be preserved and promoted.

Dr. Le Dinh Phung, an archeological expert, said that with the existing relics, it is necessary to develop a plan to select all the remains of the citadel wall, typical sections of stone and soil that are connected together, and related traces of the fortress, to build a unique complex of relics.

The values left behind show that this place deserves to be honored as a national historical relic. “This is a typical example of a unique military relic complex of Gia Lai (formerly Binh Dinh) in history, which needs to be focused on, cared for, and promoted in the value of the relic in contemporary cultural life,” Dr. Phung analyzed.
