Thanh Hoa develops border economy

From a desolate and sparsely populated land, today it has become a bright spot in socio-economic development, maintaining national defense and security, thanks to the drastic participation of local Party committees, authorities and armed forces.

Handing over houses to households settling on the border

Thanh Hoa district has an 8.9km long border with Cambodia, passing through two border communes, Thuan Binh and Tan Hiep. With a large area and sparse population, people's lives face many difficulties. In this situation, the Party Committee and the government of Thanh Hoa district have identified: Arousing potential, bringing people to the border to live and develop the economy is one of the important tasks, contributing to poverty reduction and consolidating the national defense posture associated with a solid people's security posture.

With high political determination, the District Party Committee and People's Committee of Thanh Hoa district have closely coordinated with sectors and levels, especially local armed forces, to proactively remove difficulties in institutions and policies, focus on investing in essential infrastructure, and create favorable conditions for people to feel secure in going to the border to settle down and build a new life.

One of the clear marks is the investment in a synchronous infrastructure system in the border area. The 5km-long residential road connecting Thuan Binh commune with Tan Hiep commune, developed by the district People's Committee, runs along and connects with the border patrol route, creating favorable conditions for people to travel and produce.

Along with that, the civil power line with a total investment of more than 7.6 billion VND has been put into use, including a 6.7km single-phase medium voltage line, six 50 kVA transformer stations, and a 6.17km low voltage line. Bringing electricity to each household in the border area not only brings light but also symbolizes life, faith and a bright future.

In particular, the kindergarten sponsored by the Military Region 7 Command, officially put into operation, is a vivid demonstration of the care and concern from many sides, helping children in border areas have the opportunity to study in better conditions. The "electricity - road - school" system has become the driving force for people to voluntarily register to live in residential areas adjacent to the border militia posts, creating a new look for the border area.

Since 2020, when only 10 households volunteered to live in border residential areas, this number has now increased to 40 households with long-term settlement, and 26 more households are building houses and preparing to settle down. Each family is a story of the will to rise up, of the aspiration to start a business, and build a future in the sacred land of the Fatherland.

For the young couple Phan Van Oc, in the border residential area of Tan Hiep commune, they regularly take their children to Tan Hiep kindergarten to study and then go to the fields to work. In their free time, Oc works as a laborer to earn extra money to support their family. Day by day, the simple but warm life of the young couple passes by. Phan Van Oc, a young resident in the border residential area of Tan Hiep commune, shared: “Life in the border area is now much different from before. There are roads, electricity, and children can go to school near home. My wife and I will definitely choose this place to settle down for the long term.”

Not only stabilizing their lives, many households have also risen to develop their economy and become rich legitimately. For example, the family of Nguyen Cu Ap, a Catholic from Ben Tre who came to the Thanh Hoa border to start a business, used to be a scrap collector, and has now become a scrap yard owner thanks to savings and investment. The house he built on the border land, with support from Military Region 7 and Long An province, is a testament to the achievements of the right policies and the people's efforts to overcome difficulties.

The border residential area of Thuan Binh commune is equally bustling. From isolated houses where farming is the main occupation, some households here have opened grocery stores that are bustling with customers and have other part-time jobs. Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, born in 1994, an active young woman in the border residential area of Thuan Binh commune, said: “In addition to farming on the 1 hectare of land my parents gave me as a “dowry”, I also take on sewing jobs and my husband works as a hired transporter to increase my income. Thanks to that, my family can feel secure in staying in this border area.”

To achieve these changes, it is necessary to have a coordinated process between Party committees, authorities, armed forces and people. The policy of building residential areas adjacent to border militia posts is a strategic step, both deeply humane and of long-term significance for the cause of building and defending the Fatherland in the new situation.

Rice fields in the area near the border

Through supporting land, housing construction funds, investing in technical infrastructure, taking care of education - health - livelihoods, the forces have truly "built a bridge" connecting people's hearts with the border protection posture. The sustainability of the border area comes not only from the works, but also from the people's trust in the Party, the State and local authorities.

The Thanh Hoa border area today is changing day by day, gradually realizing the aspiration for prosperity and sustainability.

From a desolate land, it has now become a gathering place for young families, for dreams of starting a business and the belief of rising from hardship. Protecting the land with humanity. Protecting the border with a peaceful and stable life for the people.

And it is the people themselves, with their hands, minds and hearts attached to their homeland, who are contributing to building a "living citadel" at the border of the Fatherland./.
