Currently, Pleiku Airport is operating medium-range aircraft such as A320, A321 with domestic flights to major political and cultural centers of the country.
The Ministry of Construction has just sent a document to the National Assembly Delegation of Gia Lai province in response to voters' petitions on the proposal to supplement the medium-term public investment portfolio for the 2026-2030 period for five key transport infrastructure projects, with a total estimated capital of up to VND 17,181 billion.
According to the petition, voters of Gia Lai province proposed that the Ministry of Construction synthesize and submit to competent authorities for consideration and inclusion in the medium-term public investment plan projects such as renovating and upgrading National Highway 25 (VND 2,114 billion); Building the Gia Lai - Phu Yen connecting road, section through Gia Lai (VND 1,200 billion); Renovating and upgrading National Highway 14C (VND 877 billion); Expanding and upgrading Pleiku Airport (VND 12,660 billion) and the connecting road from Ayun Pa (Gia Lai) to Ea H'Leo (Dak Lak) with a total investment of about VND 330 billion.
The authority to invest in projects belongs to the province.
Responding to the proposal, the Ministry of Construction affirmed that the need to invest in the above routes is reasonable, aiming to meet transportation needs, connect key economic regions, shorten travel time, reduce logistics costs and promote socio-economic development in the Central Highlands region, while contributing to strengthening national defense and security.
However, based on the provisions of the 2024 Road Law and Decree No. 165/2024/ND-CP dated December 26, 2024, the Ministry of Finance has transferred the responsibility of managing National Highways 14C, 19, 19D and 25 to the People's Committee of Gia Lai province.
The Ayun Pa - Ea H'Leo and Gia Lai - Phu Yen connecting routes are also under local management. Therefore, the authority to invest in these projects is the responsibility of the province.
The Ministry of Construction agrees with the proposal to soon renovate and upgrade the above routes, and at the same time requests the Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee to proactively allocate local resources for implementation. In case of capital difficulties, the locality can coordinate with the Ministry of Finance to synthesize and submit to the Prime Minister for consideration of support according to regulations.
Research on socialization to expand Pleiku airport
Regarding the project to expand and upgrade Pleiku Airport, the Ministry of Construction said that this airport is planned to have a capacity of 4 million passengers/year by 2030 and about 5 million passengers/year by 2050.
The Ministry has proposed that the Ministry of Finance compile a medium-term public investment plan for the 2026-2030 period for airport area renovation (runways, taxiways, etc.) at a number of key airports, including Pleiku Airport. However, this plan is still awaiting approval from competent authorities.
In case Gia Lai province needs to implement early, the Ministry proposes that the Provincial People's Committee study the plan to use the local budget for initial investment.
Particularly for the civil aviation area (including terminals, parking lots...), Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) is responsible for implementing investment according to the plan.
In case ACV cannot balance its capital sources, Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee can proactively study and propose a plan to mobilize social resources to develop airport infrastructure, submit it to the Prime Minister for consideration, and assign competent authorities to organize implementation.
The Ministry of Construction affirmed that it will continue to accompany and closely coordinate with Gia Lai province in the process of implementing key projects to serve the goal of sustainable infrastructure development and promote the economy of the Central Highlands region.
Pleiku Airport was built in 1960 and used as a military base airport. After 1975, Pleiku Airport was the base of the Vietnam Air Force. Since 1992, Civil Aviation has started to put Pleiku Airport into operation.
Currently, Pleiku Airport is operating medium-range aircraft such as A320 and A321 with domestic flights to major political and cultural centers of the country.
Pleiku Airport Passenger Terminal has a total usable area of 3,174.53m2, including 2 floors, 2 aircraft exits, serving 300 passengers/peak hour, with the capacity to serve 600,000 passengers/year.
