According to Fox News, José Carlos Arobes, a senior official of the Spanish port tax authority, said the cocaine was found in a refrigerated container in a shipment believed to contain 1,080 boxes of bananas at the port of Algeciras, in the southwest of the country.
According to the investigation, the drugs were destined for Portugal, then distributed throughout Europe. The organization behind the shipment operated through a banana export company in Machala, Ecuador.
So far, the largest cocaine seizure in Spain was 8.4 tonnes in 2018, also found in a container of bananas in Algeciras.
