Cambodia's National Assembly passed a draft amendment to the election law ahead of the general election under the chairmanship of President Heng Samrin.

The draft refers to amendments and supplements to the Law on Elections of the National Assembly, Senate, Ward Councils, and Capital, Provincial, Municipal, and District Councils. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sar Kheng, representing the Royal Government, affirmed that the amendments are completely consistent with the Constitution and current laws of the Kingdom of Cambodia. The draft aims to enhance the responsibility of voters in general and political leaders in particular when participating in elections.

The proposal to amend the election law was announced by Prime Minister Hun Sen on June 12. The Prime Minister affirmed that those who want to run for office must have the sense of responsibility of a good citizen, starting with seriously exercising the right and obligation to vote. In that spirit, those who do not vote without a legitimate, legal reason will lose their right to run for office. However, they still have the right to vote as citizens.

Cambodian voters will go to the polls on July 23 to elect a 125-member seventh National Assembly. The election will be contested by the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) and 17 other eligible political parties.
