Japan's environment ministry has just released data showing that the country's greenhouse gas emissions will fall 2.5% to a record low in the 2022-2023 fiscal year, thanks to reduced emissions in the service and industrial sectors.

Accordingly, emissions in the financial year ending at the end of March 2023 decreased from 1.164 billion tonnes of CO2 (equivalent to the previous year) to 1.135 billion tonnes of CO2. This is the lowest level recorded since data collection began in 1990-1991 and after emissions in 2021-2022 increased for the first time in eight years.

In 2022-2023, emissions from the industrial sector will decrease by 5.3% and those from the services and trade sector will decrease by 4.2%. Meanwhile, emissions from the transport sector will increase by 3.9% due to increased traffic volume in the context of economic and social activities recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic.
