Japan has added 23 chip manufacturing items that need approval for export, according to a revision of the Trade Ministry's foreign exchange law, according to the Japan Times .

Under the new rules, Japan's list of restricted items now includes cleaning, inspection and lithography equipment, a technology used to create intricate patterns that can be etched onto semiconductor wafers, essential in the production of advanced chips.

About 10 Japanese companies involved in manufacturing such devices are likely to be affected by the regulations.

However, Japanese authorities said the impact on domestic companies would likely be limited as the export controls target “extremely advanced” technology.

Responding to the move, on July 24, China declared that it was "very dissatisfied" and that these measures were clearly aimed against Beijing.

“China urges the Japanese side to bear in mind the overall benefits of Beijing-Tokyo economic and trade cooperation as well as its long-term interests and refrain from abusing export control measures,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said at a press conference.
