Risk of flash floods and landslides in 4 Northern provinces

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that from the evening of July 2-3, many dangerous weather conditions such as floods, flash floods, and landslides will continue to occur in many localities.

Many local provinces have heavy rain

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, from 5:40 p.m. to 11:40 p.m. on July 2, the provinces of Lai Chau, Son La, Gia Lai and Khanh Hoa will continue to have rain with accumulated rainfall ranging from 10-30mm, in some places over 50mm in Lai Chau and Son La provinces; from 20-50mm, in some places over 90mm in Gia Lai and Khanh Hoa provinces. There is a risk of flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides on steep slopes in many communes/wards: Khoen On, Muong Kim, Nam So, Tan Phong (Lai Chau province); Chieng Lao, Long Phieng, Muong Chien, Muong La, Ngoc Chien, Yen Son (Son La province);

Binh Khe, Vinh Quang, Vinh Son, Vinh Thanh, Vinh Thinh; Binh Phu, Dak Rong, KBang, Van Canh; An Nhon Tay, Canh Lien, Canh Vinh, Cuu An, Dak Po, Dak Song, Ia Krai, Kim Son, Kong Bo La, Krong, Lo Pang, An Binh, An Khe, Tay Son, To Tung, Ya Hoi (Gia Lai province); Tu Bong; Anh Dung, Bac Ai, Bac Ai Dong, Bac Ai Tay, Cong Hai, Khanh Vinh, Lam Son, My Son, Nam Khanh Vinh, Ninh Son, Tay Khanh Son, Tay Khanh Vinh, Thuan Bac, Trung Khanh Vinh, Van Ninh (Khanh Hoa province). Flash floods and landslides can have very negative impacts on the environment, threaten people's lives; cause local traffic congestion, affect the movement of vehicles; destroy civil and economic works, causing damage to production and socio-economic activities.

The Hydrometeorological Agency recommends that local authorities pay attention to reviewing bottlenecks and vulnerable locations in the area to take preventive and response measures.

From 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on July 2, the provinces of Lai Chau, Son La, Gia Lai and Khanh Hoa had moderate to heavy rain such as: Ban Giang (Lai Chau) 50.6mm; Chieng Khay (Son La) 61.2mm; Tay Thuan (Gia Lai) 102mm; S.Pha Km72 (Khanh Hoa) 55mm; ...

Soil moisture models show that some areas in the above provinces are close to saturation (over 85%) or have reached saturation.

Flood warning on Northern rivers

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting informed that the water level downstream of Thao River is rising; the water level on the main rivers of the Red - Thai Binh river system is fluctuating and below alert level 1.

Water level at 1:00 p.m. on July 2, on Thao River in Yen Bai was 28.98m, 1.02m below alarm level 1, in Phu Tho it was 14.45m, 3.05m below alarm level 1.

Warning, from now until July 3, on the Thao River, small rivers in the Northern region are likely to experience a flood, the flood amplitude on the rivers is from 1-2m. During this flood, the flood peak on small rivers is likely to reach alert level 1-alarm level 2, the downstream of the Thao River in Yen Bai is likely to rise above alert level 1, in Phu Tho it is still below alert level 1 (real-time warning information on areas at risk of flash floods and landslides is provided online on the website of the Department of Hydrometeorology at: https://luquetsatlo.nchmf.gov.vn and in a separate bulletin warning of flash floods and landslides). Floods on rivers and streams can cause flooding in low-lying areas along rivers, affecting activities such as water transport, aquaculture, agricultural production, people's lives and socio-economic activities.
