The principal of Nam Dan 2 High School emphasized that 2.5 is not the standard score applied to all candidates but is the lowest score in the group of students admitted in the second round.
The announcement of the second round of additional enrollment of Nam Dan 2 High School in recent days with 2.5 points/3 subjects (including priority and incentive points if any) still qualified for admission has caused a stir in public opinion in Nghe An, expressing concerns about the enrollment criteria and input quality of public schools in the province.
Through discussion, Principal of Nam Dan 2 High School Pham Xuan Phu said that the low admission score was predicted. Specifically, the school's admission score for the second round was 2.5 points, 7 points lower than the first round.
Mr. Phu also emphasized that 2.5 is not the standard score applied to all candidates but is the lowest score in the group of students admitted in the second round.
In the 2025-2026 school year, Nam Dan 2 High School was assigned by the Departmentof Education and Training to enroll 10 classes with 450 students. However, when the application deadline expired, there were only 419 applications to take the school entrance exam, so the Department adjusted the enrollment target down to 400.
After the public 10th grade entrance exam last June, because students were allowed to change their wishes, the number of applications to the school increased to 442 and the school increased the quota again to 450 students. After the first round of enrollment ended, there was still a shortage of quota, so the school announced additional enrollment.
Because the number of remaining applications is not much, according to the admission regulations, candidates who do not violate the exam regulations and do not have a failing score will have their scores taken from top to bottom until the quota is met.
With a score of 2.5 points, there are currently 31 candidates eligible for admission, of which only 1 student has a score of 2.5 points and the school is still short of 12 students compared to the assigned quota.
According to statistics, among more than 400 students entering the school this year, the number of students with an average score of 5 points per subject accounts for about 52% of the school's students. The top student in the entrance exam is a student from Khanh Son Secondary School with 27.75 points.
The principal of Nam Dan 2 High School added that in addition to the 2024-2025 school year, the school's admission score was exceptionally high at 13.2 points when for the first time the school had 720 students registering for the exam (including many students from Hung Nguyen district and the old Vinh city); in previous years, the school's admission score was only 7-9 points and was in the bottom group of the province. The school's enrollment area is mainly in the communes of Khanh Son, Nam Kim, Nam Trung, Nam Cuong, and Nam Phuc (belonging to the old Nam Dan district).
Many schools recruit additional quotas
In addition to Nam Dan 2 High School, before this year's enrollment season, a number of public schools in Nam Dan district (old) continuously posted enrollment notices and invited students to register for the school due to concerns that there would not be enough students to register for the exam.
There are two reasons for this: The number of 9th graders in the area has decreased by 500 students and nearly 600 students in Nam Dan have registered their first choice to enter non-public schools, continuing education centers or go to Hung Nguyen district (old) to take the exam. If we exclude these students, in reality, public schools in Nam Dan are short of nearly 170 applications and this is the reason why this school year all schools have lowered their admission scores and had to "sweep" the last student.
Not only in Nam Dan (old), this reality also happened to Nguyen Sy Sach High School (old Thanh Chuong district) when the school announced the first round benchmark score was 5.75 points.
According to Mr. Tran Dinh Hien, the school’s principal, “this is an unprecedentedly low score,” but the school still has to recruit the last candidate, because this year the school has 450 quotas but only 411 students took the exam. For this reason, this year the school asked for the Department’s permission to recruit students “over the line.”
Specifically, in addition to students who registered for the entrance exam, the school will recruit 42 additional positions for all students who have taken the 10th grade entrance exam and wish to study at the school. The admission score will be calculated from top to bottom until the quota is full.
Similarly, Dang Thai Mai High School (formerly Thanh Chuong district) also announced to recruit 15 additional students who have not been admitted to grade 10 of high schools in the province. Previously, the admission score to the school was 10.75 points.
The drop in admission scores was predicted in this year's admission season when many schools in the province, including many top schools, also lowered their admission scores by 3-4 points compared to the 2024-2025 school year. The reason is that this year the number of students in the province has decreased by nearly 5,000 students; meanwhile, the Department of Education and Training still maintains the enrollment quota for grade 10 as in previous years so as not to disrupt the team, affect the scale of schools and classes, and increase opportunities for students to enter public grade 10.
This is also a preparation step to facilitate schools and candidates, because according to forecasts from the 2026-2027 school year, the number of students taking the 10th grade entrance exam in Nghe An province will increase dramatically and the race to enter public 10th grade will be much more difficult.
Discussing the issue of many schools having low benchmark scores, Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Head of Secondary Education Department, Nghe An Department of Education and Training said: After students registered for the 10th grade entrance exam, the whole province had 11 public schools with the number of registered students lower than the target.
However, the organization of exams is still carried out by schools with the purpose of assessing quality and allowing students to take the exam to get a base score to enter specialized schools or increase their chances of being admitted to other public schools (after they change their preferences). Therefore, in these schools, many schools have to take all the students on the list to meet the enrollment quota.
Regarding the quality of admission to grade 10, because the grade 10 exam must be differentiated for schools to consider admission, and serve as a basis for admission to Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted and boarding schools, the results of the grade 10 exam are not uniform for all candidates.
Mr. Nguyen Trong Hoan, Chief of Office of Nghe An Department of Education and Training informed: In principle, the additional enrollment is to ensure enough 10th grade students according to the assigned plan. The enrollment process still complies with current regulations, is transparent, public and based on registration wishes. Schools continue to carry out the task of fostering knowledge to ensure the quality of learning for students after enrollment./.
