Elevating special economic zone tourism

After the merger, An Giang province has 3 special economic zones including Phu Quoc, Kien Hai and Tho Chau. With the new administrative model, these special economic zones are expected to grow rapidly and sustainably, especially in the fields of marine economy, finance, technology and especially tourism.

Beauty of special zone

Known as the rough gem in the Southwest sea of the Fatherland, Tho Chau special zone possesses a wild and peaceful beauty. This place has primeval forests, diverse flora and fauna; beautiful long beaches such as Ngu beach, Dong beach, Mun beach, Nhat beach with clear emerald green sea water and sparkling coral reefs on the seabed, unique indigenous culture, gentle and hospitable people make visitors here reluctant to leave.

Tho Chau Special Zone has 8 large and small islands. Each island has a different beauty, of which Tho Chu has the largest area and the most potential for economic development, especially tourism. Coming to Tho Chau, in addition to enjoying the fresh air, visitors can also trek across the island; rent a boat to Hon Nhan, Hon Cao, Hon Xanh... or go to the raft to fish while enjoying the peaceful space of the sea and islands.

Kien Hai Special Zone has a beautiful landscape of mountains and dozens of large and small islands. Hon Son and Nam Du are famous and popular destinations. The islands in this special zone have many beautiful, pristine beaches, rich seafood, fresh air... helping Kien Hai develop ecological sea tourism and resorts to attract tourists.

Phu Quoc, before becoming a special economic zone, was already a first-class urban area and a tourist paradise for visitors. Phu Quoc has attracted many investment projects from leading domestic and international tourism corporations and brands such asSun Group , Vingroup, BIM Group, Marriott International, Accor, Curio Collection by Hilton... creating an international-class resort tourism ecosystem stretching from the south to the north of the island.

In addition, Phu Quoc is also oriented and focused on building into a service center, high-quality eco-tourism, sea and island tourism of national and international stature. The infrastructure here is invested synchronously from international airports, international seaports... making Phu Quoc increasingly affirm its important role in connecting Vietnam with ASEAN countries and major economic centers in the world.

Unleashing potential, reaching international level

Tho Chau has a particularly important position in terms of national defense and security, located in the outpost area in the southwestern sea of the Fatherland. However, the biggest difficulty of this island is that there is only one ship going to Phu Quoc every week. To pave the way for Tho Chau's development, at the end of December 2024, the People's Committee of Kien Giang province (now An Giang) approved the policy of converting and supplementing the function of Tho Chau port into an inland waterway port, assigning relevant units to complete and announce the inland waterway port according to regulations. This is considered an important turning point to help Tho Chau develop tourism, effectively connecting with Nam Du and Phu Quoc islands in the future.

According to tourism expert Pham Cong Son - who has many years of experience as general manager of a famous tourism brand in Phu Quoc, in order to exploit tourism in Tho Chau special zone, it is necessary to orient towards sustainable, specific and controlled development to preserve the identity of the remote island, meaning that mass tourism should not be developed but should be chosen as a specialized, quality and controlled direction for tourists associated with marine and island ecotourism, academic tourism, conservation, marine research...

As for Kien Hai special economic zone, expert Pham Cong Son said that it is necessary to have a comprehensive strategy from planning to conservation, protection of marine ecosystems, environmental protection; developing connecting infrastructure, modern ports, digitizing tourism services; attracting investment in eco-resorts, standard homestays; organizing festivals, weekend seafood night markets, fishing village experience tours, "living like an islander" tourism programs... building a Kien Hai tourism brand identity, promoting through digital platforms, coordinating with KOLs, travel bloggers and linking with Phu Quoc, Ha Tien, Can Tho... to create inter-regional tours, stimulating tourism. In particular, focusing on training human resources and promoting and connecting with international tourism.

Regarding Phu Quoc, Mr. Son affirmed that this special zone has all three core factors: preferential policies, synchronous infrastructure and real growth momentum. In preparation for the APEC 2027 event, a series of key infrastructure projects have been deployed with a total capital of hundreds of thousands of billions of VND. This is a strong push that not only helps to complete the infrastructure of the pearl island but also opens up room for strong growth in the post-APEC period. Therefore, the remaining task of this special zone is to build the brand of the special zone - a global destination by promoting international communication, organizing regional events such as tourism festivals, sea culture festivals, etc. and creating sustainable livelihoods for local people.

Director of the Department of Tourism Bui Quoc Thai said that Phu Quoc tourism has made a special impression on domestic and foreign tourists with its high-class service quality. In particular, being chosen as the host of APEC 2027 is a double opportunity for Phu Quoc to develop to new heights. In particular, Kien Hai and Tho Chau special economic zones need to have more preferential policies, especially on taxes, land policies, planning, visas, etc., to attract investment and support tourism to take off. "When tourism in these two special economic zones is strong, the formation of a triangular connection between Phu Quoc, Kien Hai (especially Nam Du) and Tho Chau will certainly bring many new experiences to tourists, helping this area become an attractive destination in the Southwest sea of the Fatherland...", Mr. Thai commented.
