These days, from early morning, Ms. Nguyen Thi Loan (Cua Linh village, Mai Hoa commune - old Vu Quang district) is busy going to the garden to harvest lemons. Lemons are bought as soon as they are harvested, so people are very excited.

Ms. Loan shared: " With the characteristics of the hillside soil and suitable climate conditions, I chose lemon trees to develop the economy . With nearly 50 lemon trees for harvest, on average, my family harvests 1-2 quintals per day. The current price of lemons ranges from 8-9 thousand VND/kg, relatively stable. It is expected that the entire area of ​​the family will yield nearly 2 tons of fruit ."

Not far away, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tuy (Cua Linh village, Mai Hoa commune) is also weighing lemons to import to traders. Mr. Tuy said: " At this time, lemons are in season, the output is high, and traders buy large quantities, so we do not have to worry about output. For nearly a week now, on average, I have sold about 2-3 quintals of lemons per day, bringing in an income of about 1.8-2 million/day. It is expected that nearly 60 lemon trees of my family will yield 1.5 - 2 tons of fruit ."





According to many households, lemon trees are harvested all year round, but the main season usually lasts from early July to late August, and the off-season lasts from December to February of the following year. Lemons will be harvested 12-18 months after planting, and the harvest period can last 15-20 years. Not only that, this is also a drought-resistant tree, the fertilization process is not too complicated, and the investment cost is low.

Mr. Nguyen Van Nghi - Secretary of the Party Cell of Cua Linh village (Mai Hoa commune) shared: " The whole village currently has more than 80 households growing lemons, each household has an average of 50-100 lemon trees. For many years, lemon trees have become the main crop, bringing in a good income for the people, an average of 30-50 million VND/household per crop. To increase productivity, in addition to care techniques, every year, people also proactively graft new trees, remove old trees to maintain the economic efficiency that lemon trees bring .”

Not only in Cua Linh village, Cao Phong and Quang Thanh villages also have hundreds of households developing their economy thanks to growing lemons. Although it is just the beginning of the main season, the harvest atmosphere in the mountainous commune of Mai Hoa is very busy. Traders in the area and in Nghe An and Quang Binh come to buy the whole garden.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh - a lemon buyer in Mai Hoa commune shared: " For about a week now, I have started buying 2-4 tons of lemons per day to send to wholesale markets in Hanoi , Hai Phong, Nghe An... Lemons are currently purchased at a price of 8-9 thousand VND/kg depending on the weight of the fruit. Lemons in this area have been famous for a long time, so consumption is also very convenient. We also constantly update the price according to the market, hoping that the price will increase in the near future. future so that people can have more income ."

According to statistics from the People's Committee of Mai Hoa commune, there are nearly 350 hectares of lemon trees in the area, of which the total area for production is 300 hectares, with an estimated total output of about 7,500 tons. Currently, lemons are purchased at a price of 8-9 thousand VND/kg, with high productivity, so people are very excited. The local government is also urging people to speed up the harvest; at the same time, regularly checking and reviewing to avoid hoarding and price pressure.
