Early in the morning, 13 cows in Phan Bao Tran's barn in Lu village, Yen Son commune (now Bao Yen commune) were mooing as if to convey the message that they were very hungry. Bao Tran quickly grabbed a bowl of cold rice and quickly walked down to the barn to get a bundle of grass to feed them.

Bao Tran's day begins at 6:30, when the sun peeks behind the distant mountains. Without anyone calling her, at that time she wakes up, finishes her personal hygiene, cooks breakfast for the whole family, then feeds the cows.

During the summer vacation, Tran was given full responsibility by her grandmother and parents to take care of 13 cows. After feeding the cows, Tran took the opportunity to cut grass until almost noon, then she returned home to cook and wait for her parents to come home for dinner. In the early afternoon, Tran went to graze the cows on a grassy hill quite far from home and did not return home until after 6 pm.

Phan Bao Tran shared: Next year I will be in 9th grade. My parents taught me to do these jobs very early, because my family is short of people, so I have to help my parents manage the family. But I don't find it hard, on the contrary, I am very happy to see the herd of cows grow up every day. My mother promised to reward me with a guitar if I take good care of the cows. That is also the motivation for me to do my job well.

Thao Thi Yen is about to enter 5th grade but she already knows how to do many things to help her uncle and aunt. Her parents died early, Yen lives with her grandmother and her uncle and aunt in a small house on top of Phin Giang village, Bao Nhai commune.

Yen's summer was meaningful because she had a lot of time with her grandmother - the person who always took care of, protected, sheltered, and soothed the misfortunes of Yen's life. Every day, Yen clung to her grandmother, feeding the chickens, collecting eggs, herding the buffaloes, cleaning the house, and cooking while waiting for her uncle and aunt to return. Yen and her siblings - her uncle and aunt's children, often assigned each person a task to complete as soon as possible before her uncle and aunt returned.

Yen's uncle and aunt work hard in the schools all year round. They have many children and need to raise Yen, so life is very difficult. Therefore, Yen always tries to study well. During summer vacation, she helps her uncle and aunt with housework, herding buffalo, and harvesting crops.

Thao Thi Yen said: The work I do during the summer vacation is not hard at all, I feel very happy when I help my grandmother and uncle and aunt. Actually, for children in the highlands like us, we probably have more interesting summer experiences than our city friends. We can freely play in the vast natural space, pick wild fruits, and we also create many fun games that many city friends wish for. But I also wish to go to an amusement park or a swimming pool like my friends.

As for Thao A Thang, Sa Pa village, Muong Khuong commune, summer is the time when he and his friends in the village can freely wander in the cardamom gardens or go into the forest to find bird nests and mouse nests.

The children in the village also followed their parents to the fields to weed peanuts, listening to their grandfather tell stories about the origins of each tree and rock in the village. Thang also knew how to help his mother cook rice, wash dishes, and feed the chickens - these were jobs that any child in the highlands could do well during the summer vacation.
