Early this morning, Group B of EURO 2024 ended with exciting matches. Croatia missed the chance to decide their own fate when Italy scored a last-minute equalizer to make it 1-1. Standing in third place with only 2 points, the runner-up of the 2018 World Cup will have to wait for the results of the remaining groups to know if they have the right to continue or not.
Still, Croatia have hope and they should thank Spain. Despite having already secured top spot in Group B and fielding only a reserve team against Albania, La Roja still won 1-0 thanks to an early goal from Ferran Torres. Had Spain dropped points, third place in Group B would have gone to Albania.
Not only did Spain help Croatia keep their hopes alive, they also indirectly helped a series of other giants secure early tickets before the final match. Specifically, England, France and the Netherlands have officially secured tickets to the round of 16 of EURO 2024 without having to care about the results of the remaining matches.
All three giants have 4 points so far, and this is the number of points that ensures them to be in the top 3 of the group, and also in the top 4 best 3rd place teams of the tournament. The reason is that the two 3rd place teams have been determined to have lower points. Hungary is 3rd in Group A with 3 points, while Croatia has only 2 points in Group B.
Thus, a total of 8 teams have won tickets to the round of 16 of EURO 2024, including host Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Portugal, England, France and the Netherlands.
