According to the report, a Mac equipped with a 5G chip will be able to connect to cellular networks like a 5G-enabled iPhone or iPad without the need for Wifi or a mobile hotspot.
It is known that Apple's first modem chip will limit 5G speeds below 6GHz, but the second version will support faster mmWave technology.
It seems that Apple is aiming to surpass Qualcomm with the 3rd generation model - offering better performance and AI features. So that it can then produce its own chips for its devices.
Previously, in 2023, Gurman also mentioned that Macs with Apple-designed modem chips would be introduced as early as 2028 and Apple planned to integrate 5G connectivity into Apple silicon chips.
5G connectivity in Macs has been rumored for years, and Apple considered adding a modem chip to the MacBook Air back in 2008. However, Steve Jobs said Apple wouldn't do it because the modem chip took up too much space in the case and would lock customers into a specific carrier.
