DTO - Promoting the spirit of "Old age, bright example", the elderly association members of My Ngai ward (Dong Thap province) are not only exemplary, taking the lead in implementing local movements and activities, but also actively participating in the movement of the elderly doing good business . Through the movement, many typical examples have emerged in building production models that bring high efficiency, which are bright examples for their children and grandchildren to follow. A typical example is Mr. Nguyen Van Khanh (born in 1954). After the My Ngai ward Elderly Association deployed and launched widely among all members of the movement of the elderly doing good business and participating in training courses, transferring science and technology; exploiting and promoting the strengths of each production area to promote the process of restructuring crops and livestock, Mr. Nguyen Van Khanh boldly converted the area of rice and mango cultivation to invest in, expand production and trade in ornamental plants, mainly yellow apricot. From a few dozen trees, he now has over 200 yellow apricot trees, including trees over 50 years old and especially a star fruit tree over 70 years old.
Mr. Khanh (right) shares his experience in caring for yellow apricot trees.
In Mr. Nguyen Van Khanh's yellow apricot garden, each tree has its own shape and meaning; the trees are planted in pots, placed in straight rows, and green. Mr. Nguyen Van Khanh said: "At first, I encountered many difficulties due to few customers, but later, I got acquainted and was introduced by friends, so the number of customers coming to buy apricot increased day by day. To maintain and gradually develop the profession in accordance with the new situation, I boldly invested in seedlings and the Ward Elderly Association supported me and found familiar customers to introduce output. My family's total annual income is about 1 billion VND".
In addition to increasing his family's income, Mr. Nguyen Van Khanh also creates jobs for 7 local workers (income of about 4 million VND/worker/month).
Along with taking care of economic development, Mr. Nguyen Van Khanh's family has always been exemplary in strictly implementing the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's policies and laws, and local regulations; actively participating in and effectively implementing campaigns and movements launched by the locality and the Elderly Association at all levels, especially the movement "Elderly people doing good business" launched by the Central Association.
He also sets a good example in charity activities, contributes to the Gratitude Fund, the Fund for the Poor, helps the elderly in difficult circumstances (supports over 25 million VND/year). Mr. Khanh also enthusiastically shares his experience with young people in the process of starting a business to get rich. Every year, Mr. Khanh is recognized by the People's Committee of My Ngai Ward, the Elderly Association of the Ward, and the Elderly Association at higher levels as "Outstanding Elderly People with Good Economic Performance".
Mr. Khanh confided: "In the coming time, my family and I will continue to maintain and gradually develop the business to suit the needs and tastes of consumers, continue to create jobs for workers and actively carry out social charity work in the locality."
It can be said that the emulation movement "Elderly people doing good business" not only has economic, spiritual, will, and good humanistic values, but also promotes the role and position of the elderly ineducating their children and grandchildren to be independent, diligent, and hard-working in production and labor, striving to become rich legitimately. We believe that My Ngai ward will have many elderly people doing good business like Mr. Nguyen Van Khanh, thereby contributing to improving the health and quality of life of the elderly, helping them live happily, healthily, and usefully, worthy of being "tall trees" for the younger generation to follow.
