Earning billions when selling stocks when the market is booming
Mr. Pham Van Dau - CFO of Ho Chi Minh City Development Joint Stock Commercial Bank ( HDBank ) - recently sent a notice to the Securities Commission to register to sell 1.3 million HDB shares to serve personal needs.
The transaction is expected to take place from September 5 to October 1 through negotiation or order matching.
Currently, Mr. Dau holds more than 151.4 million HDB shares, equivalent to 4.31% of the bank's charter capital. If the transaction is completed, his ownership ratio will decrease to 4.28%.
At the close of trading on August 29, HDB shares reached VND33,450/share, up more than 26% within a month. At this price, Mr. Dau's sale could bring in nearly VND44 billion.
The Military Commercial Joint Stock Bank ( MBBank ) has also just announced a plan to divest 60 million shares at MB Securities Company (MBS), equivalent to 10.45% of charter capital, with the goal of "increasing the popularity" of this securities company.
According to the plan, all shares will be traded by order matching within a period of one month from September 3.
If the deal is successful, MBBank's ownership ratio at MBS will decrease from the current level to about 66%, equivalent to 377.3 million shares.
On the market, MBS shares are currently trading at around VND41,700/share, up nearly 60% in the past quarter. At the current price, the capital sale could help MBBank earn approximately VND2,500 billion.
Notably, the divestment took place right after MBS closed the shareholder list to pay a 12% cash dividend (VND 1,200/share).
Real estate leaders "race" to sell capital
In the real estate sector, Mr. Nguyen Van Dat - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Phat Dat Real Estate Development Corporation (PDR) - attracted attention when he registered to sell 88 million PDR shares by negotiation, from September 5 to October 3.
The deal took place in the context of PDR's price hitting a one-year peak, closing at VND24,550/share on August 29, up more than 50% in just one quarter. Liquidity of this stock has also exploded since the beginning of July, reaching its highest level since 2023.
If the sale is successful, Mr. Dat will reduce his ownership from 36.72% to 27.7% of capital, equivalent to nearly 272 million shares, and at the same time collect about 2,200 billion VND to serve his personal financial needs.
Several other real estate industry leaders have also reduced their holdings in businesses as the stock market has surged.
For example, at Dat Xanh Group (DXG), Mr. Ha Duc Hieu - a member of the Board of Directors - sold more than 6.35 million DXG shares from August 4 to 26, thereby reducing his ownership to 414,033 shares.
During the same period, Mr. Bui Ngoc Duc - General Director of DXG - also divested more than 744,000 shares, bringing the holding ratio down to 952,000 units.
Recently, Mr. Duc's son has aggressively acquired more shares in Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAG), while some real estate leaders are taking advantage of the opportunity to divest capital at high prices.
Specifically, in the session of August 28, Mr. Doan Hoang Nam, son of Mr. Doan Nguyen Duc - Chairman of HAG, completed the purchase of 27 million HAG shares with a transaction value of about 395 billion VND.
After the deal, Mr. Nam's ownership ratio increased from 2.55% to 4.92% of charter capital, equivalent to more than 52 million shares.
