Busy work schedule, only sleeping 5-6 hours/day is okay?

Due to the busy modern life, many people believe that only 5-6 hours of sleep per night is enough to maintain good health. However, science has proven that this is not the optimal amount of sleep, and can even be dangerous if prolonged.

Adults should sleep 7 to 9 hours a night. This is the amount of sleep that best maintains physical and mental health. When the body only sleeps 5 to 6 hours a day, many physiological and psychological functions will be disrupted, from memory, immunity to endocrine and longevity, according to the health website Medical News Today (UK).

The body will experience the following changes if you only sleep 5-6 hours/night:

Immunodeficiency

One of the worst consequences of not getting enough sleep is a weakened immune system. Research from the University of California - San Francisco (USA) shows that people who sleep less than 6 hours a night are 4 times more likely to catch a cold than those who sleep 7 hours or more.

Deep sleep is when the body produces cytokines, molecules that help the body fight inflammation and respond to viruses and bacteria. Lack of sleep reduces cytokine levels, causing the immune system to respond more slowly. As a result, the body is more susceptible to illness and takes longer to recover.

Reduced lifespan

Research in the Journal of Sleep Research shows that sleeping less than 6 hours/night over a long period of time increases the risk of early death, especially from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity and cancer.

Not getting enough sleep affects the regulation of insulin, the stress hormone cortisol, and blood pressure. Another study in the European Heart Journal found that people who slept less than six hours had a 48% increased risk of heart disease and a 15% increased risk of stroke compared to people who slept seven to eight hours.

Increased risk of accidents

Lack of sleep can be as dangerous as drinking and driving. Surveys show that people who only sleep 5-6 hours a night are twice as likely to have a traffic accident than people who sleep 7-9 hours.

The reason is that lack of sleep causes slow reflexes, lack of concentration, and daytime sleepiness. The result is an increased risk of making mistakes at work, driving, and even causing serious work accidents.

Revealing body expression

We can hide our tiredness with coffee or makeup. However, our bodies will always have a way to warn us through external manifestations such as eye bags, dark circles, dull skin and premature wrinkles, according to Medical News Today .
