Strange breast milk cafe costs 8 USD/cup in Russia

In an interview with Mash newspaper, businessman Maxim Kobelev, owner of a breast milk cafe in the city of Perm in the Ural region (Russia), said that there are currently 9 breastfeeding mothers providing milk for the cafe.

Currently, the unique cafe remains small-scale, with around 50 cups of special cappuccinos sold every day at the chain’s three locations in Perm. Each day, the cafes need around 5 liters of breast milk.

Kobelev’s business seems to be booming, as his coffee with breast milk is selling for a relatively high price. Each cup of coffee with breast milk costs 650 rubles (about $8), while a regular cappuccino of the same size costs an average of 150 rubles (less than $2) in Russia.

However, Kobelev also has to pay 1,000 rubles ($12) for each bag of breast milk. Mothers must provide all the necessary medical documents to prove that their milk is safe. One of the mothers who provided milk to Mash said that this is not an easy income to earn these days. She also revealed that she has a lot of milk, so she can still feed her child.

Kobelev said he plans to expand this type of business and is looking for more breastfeeding mothers to increase his milk reserves.

The entrepreneur hopes to sell 1,000 cups of breast milk coffee a day by the end of the year.
It is unclear whether Kobelev has researched whether there is actually a strong market demand for this strange coffee in Perm – a city with a population of just over 1 million.
